Washington Street Shuffle–Out with the Humus and in with the Curry–Hoboken Dhaba to Open Soon

Hoboken Dhaba

The former location for The Humus Bar is now slated to be Hoboken’s newest Indian Restaurant when opened. Going by the name Hoboken Dhaba this Indian restaurant is saying out with the humus and in with the Tandoori and curry. The location for this new eatery is at 630 Washington Street. Hoboken Dhaba will be joining Karma, India on The Hudson, Matt and Meera, and Bombay West for the palettes of Hobokenites who love Indian food. Here is wishing the new owners the best of luck with that location. May the Washington Street Shuffle slow a bit with a place that establishes itself for years. Time will tell.

McDonald’s in Hoboken Re-opens with a New Modern Look

McDonalds Re-Opens in Hoboken

McDonald’s in Hoboken after completing an extensive renovation and modernizing both inside and out did a soft opening this weekend. Located at the corner of 3rd and Washington, this hub of a fast food and good Wi-Fi connection actually does have a few healthy items on the menu but does anyone honestly go to McDonald’s to eat a salad? Their official Grand Opening will run the week or April 22- April 28. May McDonalds super size its profits without super sizing their patrons.

Hoboken Photo of the Day – Clouds over Midtown on Washington Street

8th and Washington Street Clouds Hoboken HDR

I took this photo last night and wanted to capture the clouds over Hoboken’s street-scape before retiring for the day in terms of picture taking. I really liked the cloud formation which prompted me to take this shot.

Hoboken Photo of the Day – 9th and Washington Street HDR

9th and Washington Photomatix Pro Mod 2 HDR smaller

This photo uses a subject that I have featured before for the Photo of the Day series, namely the corner of 9th and Washington Street in Hoboken, NJ. This residential building is one of the finest condos in Hoboken and looks good on the outside as well on the inside. This photo was taken with TheBoken’s new camera, the Nikon D600 which has an amazing sensor and 24 megapixel resolution. Holy hard drives Batman! The HDR processing was done using Photomatix Pro and some retouching was done in the Gimp2, a freeware program that does almost all of what Photoshop does. Photomatix Pro has some nice features and produces some really cool HDR effects that if used properly can yield some nice results. One of the artifacts that comes with amateur HDR photos is the “halo effect” which is not present in this photo. Some of my early HDR photos had it and it took some time learning how to eliminate it. I like this version better than my previous work since it uses subtlety to display the advantages of HDR photography.

So with these new tools I hope to produce even more quality HDR shots than before from Hoboken and beyond. Next stop Central Park, New York City (when the weather gets nicer).

Hoboken Photo of the Day–Nice Copper Bay Window on Washington Street

Washington Street Bay Window Between 9th and 10th Streets HDR Winter 2013

New condos may be going up in Hoboken in an attempt to handle the demand to live here but nothing replaces the charm of a copper bay window that has changed color over time due to oxidation. The patina of the old copper gives this bay window it a classic antiqued look and makes this a winning candidate for Photo of the Day.   This home is located between 9th and 10 and Washington Street.

Heard on the Street – Apple Store Coming to Hoboken at Former Tutta Pasta Location?

Tutta Pasta to be a Apple Store Hoboken NJ

This has not been officially confirmed yet but according to several sources known to TheBoken.com an Apple Store is finally coming to Hoboken. The store has been reported be at the former Tutta Pasta and Lounge 200 location at the Northeast corner of 2nd and Washington Streets in Hoboken, NJ. This passes the feasibility test based on the following pieces of information TheBoken.com was able to extract from several reliable sources (that were not some anonymous blogger on another nefarious website in town) In other words I had to verify some of this before publishing…..

  • Apple has purportedly looked at other larger retail locations before in Hoboken like Blockbuster.
  • Apple products fit the higher income Hoboken demographic well.
  • Other chains are starting to come here like Baby Gap and Anthropologie.
  • The rent being paid for both floors of this location is rumored to be around $40,000. Who else but Apple could possibly afford it?
  • If both floors are rented it could be big enough for an Apple Store.
  • The location is even closer to the PATH which could draw in even more foot traffic.
  • Both Tutta Pasta and 200 Lounge (apparently) have shut down so something new is going into that location.

These factors indicate that there is a good chance that this could lead to an Apple store.  If this turns out to be true this would dramatically boost the Hoboken retail landscape. Apple products are popular but watch out the droid is becoming very popular. Of course we already have enough cell phone stores to handle that demand.

Rita's Italian Ices Re-opening 2013 Hoboken NJ

Rita’s Italian Ices located at 121 Washington St  Hoboken is open today. The photo shown is from yesterday where they were announcing they are now open for the Spring Summer and Fall seasons. They routinely close up shop for the winter and with Ralph’s Italian ices apparently not re-opening, they appear to have less competition for at least Italian Ices. For more information call their number at (201) 880-1767.

Washington Street Shuffle – Ralph’s Italian Ices Kaput?

Ralph's Italian Ices Closing - Hoboken 3-4-2013

Ralph’s Italian Ices locate at the Northeast corner of 8th Street and Washington Street in Hoboken appears to have left that location. A real estate agency sign (Empire) is shown below indicates that the location is for rent. That is a shame since the owner invested a lot of money putting in refrigerators and equipment but perhaps the foot traffic wasn’t there consistently enough. The product and price were good and the staff and ownership were friendly but operational costs have to be covered by a certain amount of  steady business. Perhaps global warming didn’t happen fast enough. It is possible that another mini-chain store like Baby Gap or something else will have the financial wherewithal to give it a shot.
