Mills Tavern Open in Hoboken After Major Renovation

The former site of the Whiskey Bar is now Mills Tavern in Hoboken and will try to capitalize on the more upscale sports bar trend that has hit Hoboken by storm in the last few years. Joining Black Bear, Texas Arizona, 4 Ls, Wicked Wolf Tavern, McSwiggans, Village Pourhouse, and 1 Republik just to name a few recently added or renovated sports bars, Mills Tavern is in what should be an ideal location to capitalize on the foot traffic from weekend visitors and weekday commuters off the PATH alike.

Mills Tavern Hoboken exterior

Some residents may lament the absence of the live music that the Whiskey Bar brought to the stage Thursdays through Saturdays but the owners obviously thought it was time to renovate and keep up with the current up-scaling of Hoboken establishments. I spoke with owner David Jaycee and this is one of four establishments he is now at least part owner of. They include Black Bear Bar, Bahama Mama’s Arthur’s and now Mills Tavern. David graciously gave TheBoken.com a tour of the place. As part of the full building renovation the 2nd floor apartment that was there was eliminated and is now a 2nd floor bar area that even has some lounge space. The space is very large with ample TVs and selection of about 20 tap beers. There are three separate bars altogether and the theme is Americana throughout with salvaged signs and tables made from re-purposed wood.

Here are more photos below:

Mills Tavern Hoboken fried pickles

They even have a limited bar menu that includes fried pickles shown above. The pickles were tasty and I also liked the angry burger which was well prepared but a bit on the smallish side. Overall, the price points for the bar menu are very reasonable as well as the drinks . Here is wishing this new Hoboken establishment the best of luck.

Update 8/27/2013: On a subsequent visit I tried their double burger and thought that was a good value. The freshly cut french fries are also flavorful and fresh.

Rosticeria Da gigi brings “Real Simple Honest Food” to the Mile Square – For Real!

Rosticeria Da Gigi Hoboken HDR 8-9-2013

Rosticera Da gigi located at 916 Washington Street in Hoboken recently opened their doors to give Mile Square residents on the go the option of real simple honest food at reasonable prices. They are open from 7am-10pm Monday through Friday and 8am-10pm Saturday and Sunday which gives Hobokenites the option for breakfast lunch and dinner. TheBoken.com sampled both the breakfast option as well as a lunch option today and came away impressed given the fact that they recently just opened.

For breakfast, not being a huge fan of eggs (personal choice)  I opted for 7 grain toast, sausage, and home fries to coat my drunken stomach. The home fries were very good and the sausage was a lot like kielbasa but a bit different. Abe Froman the “Sausage King of Chicago”  would likely approve in the world of Ferris Bueller but in real life the sausage was very good as well. For an ala-carte breakfast it certainly hit the spot. The coffee was also delicious and had a strong bold flavor without being bitter.

For lunch and dinner this eatery has a choice of cold cut sandwiches, paninis and even dipped sandwiches. However where TheBoken.com think this casual eatery will makes its mark is in the roasted meats prepared on the premises. Hankering for a slice of beef brisket several hours later I came back and had the beef brisket with two sides including broccoli rabe. The brisket is simply to die for. Slow cooking is the key to this tasty dish and the flavor and the tenderness of the meat which could easily be cut with a butter knife make this a worthwhile regular place. Several long time residents that I know have already visited this place over a dozen times and find the pot roast, roast chicken and other slow cooked roasts a reason to keep coming back. Newer residents of Hoboken will also likely be attracted to this place as well as you can get a balanced lunch or dinner for only $9.95 with a nice portion of meat and two sides. I am sure most people who can follow simple directions could pull off a halfway decent brisket but who has the time to do it right? This is where Rosticera Da gigi will likely establish a niche.

I spoke to Mark Bogdanos, one of the owners before this place opened up and he passionately described his culinary vision for this establishment with an enthusiasm that I have not seen in quite some time. It is great when passion actually connects with execution and one can only hope through word of mouth this place is in business for some time. Below are more photos of the eatery and food options.….

Here is the latest men’s grooming place to open up in Hoboken……

Roosters Men’s Grooming Center Opens in Hoboken

Community is invited to Grand Opening Celebration on August 14

Roosters Logo HobokenRoosters Men’s Grooming Center (MGC) has opened at 610 Washington Street in Hoboken.  Located in one of the city’s historic buildings, the store gives you the feeling of an old fashioned barbershop, combined with modern amenities and the latest in hair care services and products for men and boys.

“We are the only Roosters MGC in the country located in such an historic setting,” said Jonathan Shafer, the store’s owner.  “We look forward to becoming a destination place for families, singles and young people walking by to discover the type of services we offer.”

Roosters MGC’s customers are invited to relax in oversized leather barber chairs in seven semi-private barber stations.  Roosters’ custom services include precision haircuts and shaves with hot steam towels, deep cleansing facial massages, moisturizing lotions and top-of-the-line hair and skin care products for men.

Before opening the Hoboken store, Shafer shared that he conducted exhaustive research on a variety of franchises and spoke with at least 30 franchise owners.

Roosters MGC barber station Hoboken

“Roosters had a special appeal because of its focus on providing excellent customer service to a largely underserved population,” added Shafer, who recalled when he worked in Manhattan and joined a men’s grooming club for the services they offered. “Similar to Manhattan, we felt that Hoboken was the perfect location to open an upscale barbershop for men who wanted an experience above and beyond a basic haircut.  Roosters is that perfect combination of luxury and excellent service at a reasonable price for Hoboken’s discriminating residents.”

Roosters MGC has hired Tiffany LaFera as manager to lead the store’s team of experienced barbers.  Tiffany has worked in both barber shops and salons as a full service barber and men’s stylist, specializing in straight razor shaves and straight razor detailing among other services geared towards men.  In addition to Tiffany, Roosters MGC has brought on additional highly trained barbers and stylists to serve Hoboken’s residents.

The public is invited to attend Roosters MGC’s official ribbon cutting and grand opening celebration from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 14, 2013. The event will include refreshments, prize drawings, entertainment and demonstrations of Roosters MGC’s hair care services.

The new store is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. To schedule an appointment or purchase a gift card, call 201-683-9970.  Walk-ins are always welcome.

Roosters MGC in Hoboken is one of nearly 60 stores of this fast growing national franchise.  The first Roosters MGC was opened in Lapeer, Michigan in 1999 by Master Barber and Founder Joe Grondin, who strives to give customers the best in men’s personal grooming services to ensure the experience brings you back.  Roosters MGC is part of the worldwide family of Regis companies. Washington Street Shuffle – Ladies: Pretty Kitty to Open Soon in Hoboken for your Brazillian Wax Needs

The Pretty Kitty, a Brazillian Waxing and Brow Bar is set to open up in Hoboken soon. Located at 628 Washington Street this beauty establishment joins a number of nail salons and beauty related businesses in Hoboken right nearby. Their website is http://www.prettykittywax.com.

The Pretty Kitty New Business Hoboken NJ 6-26-2013

Pretty Kitty is a franchise and was started  by entrepreneur Tricia Hetherington who explains the differentiation of their salon for the Brazilian wax versus their competitors……

From their website:

About The Pretty Kitty

“At The Pretty Kitty we do things differently than most waxing establishments. Many people are surprised & sometimes skeptical to learn that we use soft wax instead of hard wax, which is a more common and easier to use wax for the Brazilian these days. We use a high quality soft wax designed for sensitive skin. Using a soft wax for a full Brazilian requires skill if it is to be done well. Many estheticians have never been properly trained in the right technique using soft wax and therefore reject its use for the full Brazilian. With the proper prepping of the skin and my proprietary technique, pain is minimized, is more efficient, and more gentle than using hard wax.

All of Pretty Kittys’ estheticians are personally and extensively trained by me and must pass to my company standard of performance in order to become part of The Pretty Kitty team.

Our Brazilians are done in just 10-15 min, we never reuse our wax sticks and we believe that client education is of the utmost importance to achieve the best and longest lasting results.

Because of our high standards, attention to detail, and excellent customer service, we have been able to rapidly expand to multiple territories. We invite you to “Experience the Difference”.”

- Tricia Hetherington/Owner

Hoboken would be the third such New Jersey location for the franchise and perhaps they can open in time for bikini season. The headline of the post mentioned the ladies but this business also has waxing for men as well.

Wee Babe Opens up Shop on Washington Street in Hoboken

Wee Babe Hoboken NJ 415 Washington Street Retail

Entrepreneurs Beau Kuhn and Selina Aquino are bringing the Brooklyn baby to Hoboken with the Grand Opening of their second location of Wee Babe, that happened Friday, June 14, at 415 Washington St.

The specialty store features a line-up of top notch, parentally-rated baby gear, gadgets and apparel for babies and beyond. The first location opened last year in Williamsburg, another bustling baby town. The success of that store paved the way for the location in Hoboken, where Kuhn lives and Aquino had worked for more than a decade. The store specializes in selling only those products that are parent approved and is competitively priced with other baby specialty stores.

“Our vision for Williamsburg was working and we were making so many deliveries to Hoboken when we came across an ideal location,” says Kuhn, a mother of three. “Besides that fact that this city is my home, Hoboken is a small geographical area with lots of families. And it’s a walking city, which is perfect for our products.”

The Wee Babe success is based on personalized service and an educational approach to products. “Part of the reason our concept is working is because we look at our staff as educators, not sales people,” says Aquino, who is also a mother of three. “Our product selection is based on our personal experiences, customer feedback and lots and lots of research and product testing. We strive to have the newest, best products and provide very personalized customer service.”

The 800-square-foot store features such popular baby brand names as Clek, BumbleRide, Baby Jogger, Beco and Mama’s and Papa’s. The Grand Opening celebration is at 1:00 pm on Friday and will run Friday and Saturday with free gifts with purchase, giveaways and raffle prizes while supplies last. The raffle lineup includes goodies from Aden+Anis; Mum2Mum; Yulli; Suppori; Tivoli Couture, Fred’s Swim Academy, Stokke and strollers by Munchin and Quinny.

Hoboken Dhaba

The former location for The Humus Bar is now slated to be Hoboken’s newest Indian Restaurant when opened. Going by the name Hoboken Dhaba this Indian restaurant is saying out with the humus and in with the Tandoori and curry. The location for this new eatery is at 630 Washington Street. Hoboken Dhaba will be joining Karma, India on The Hudson, Matt and Meera, and Bombay West for the palettes of Hobokenites who love Indian food. Here is wishing the new owners the best of luck with that location. May the Washington Street Shuffle slow a bit with a place that establishes itself for years. Time will tell.

McDonald’s in Hoboken Re-opens with a New Modern Look

McDonalds Re-Opens in Hoboken

McDonald’s in Hoboken after completing an extensive renovation and modernizing both inside and out did a soft opening this weekend. Located at the corner of 3rd and Washington, this hub of a fast food and good Wi-Fi connection actually does have a few healthy items on the menu but does anyone honestly go to McDonald’s to eat a salad? Their official Grand Opening will run the week or April 22- April 28. May McDonalds super size its profits without super sizing their patrons.
