NYC Report Shows that Bike Lanes are Very Good for Retail Business – What About Hoboken?

NYC recently released a report that shows bike lanes reduce traffic accidents and improve retail sales to boot. This recently released report has been shared on major news sites like the Wall Street Journal and blog sites as well. Mayor Dawn Zimmer of Hoboken  is known for championing bike lanes for their greenness and pedestrian safety but who knew 5 years ago that there would be potentially substantial retail benefits as well? Now the argument for bike lanes could be extended to the fact that they are good for commerce as well.  Still, Hoboken is not NYC but some of these principles could possibly be applied to Hoboken in future planning where they make sense.

The Mayor has put forth a plan to completely redo Washington Street incorporating some of these aspects. In her State of the City Address on February 13th, 2013 The Mayor remarked “Washington Street is our main street, it represents the core of our city, and it is key to our economic and social vitality. But it’s also in need of a major upgrade. This year we hope to complete a redesign process with the community so that we can secure more grants for renovations.”

Link to State of the City Address: http://boken.it/3df

The Mayor followed through and put her Washington Street Redesign up for vote on the City Council. However, the obstructionist City Council Minority consisting of Occhipinti, Mason, Russo and Castellano defeated the bond to do the study. Without a study the City of Hoboken would not be eligible for substantial grants that could cut the cost of repaving and redesigning Washington Street for the 21st Century.

Here are some of the study’s findings:

NYC Bike Report 8-9th Avenues

First protected bicycle lane in the US – 8th and 9th Avenues (Manhattan):

  • 35% decrease in injuries to all street users (8th Ave)
  • 58% decrease in injuries to all street users (9th Ave)
  • Up to 49% increase in retail sales (Locally-basedbusinesses on 9th Ave from 23rd to 31st Sts., compared to 3% borough-wide)

NYC Bike Report Union Square North

Expanding an iconic space – Union Square North (Manhattan):

  • Speeding decreased by16%, while median speeds increased by 14%
  • injury crashes fell by 26%
  • 49% fewer commercial vacancies (compared to 5% more borough-wide)
  • 74% of users prefer the new configuration

These are just a few examples from the report. Share your thoughts in the comments below as to whether or not such concepts could improve the overall quality of life in Hoboken. Below is the full report for your perusal.

Nomad Truck Hoboken Grand opening at Village Pourhouse 4-13-2013
Mobile Fashion Truck to Launch in Greater NYC Area – Boutique Brings Haute Wheels to Hoboken in April

Nomad, the mobile retail boutique, today announced that after four months of construction and almost a year of planning, it will hit the road and roll up its doors on April 13th, 2013, with a grand opening celebration outside of the Village Pourhouse located at 205 1st Street  in Hoboken, NJ. The launch party will run from 11am – 4pm and will offer drink specials at the Village Pourhouse for Nomad customers.

The carefully curated mobile fashion boutique offers trendy ladies’ fashions for under $100. All inventory is handpicked by Jessie Goldenberg, founder and CEO, who established Nomad after observing the overwhelming success of the food truck industry and the growing trend of pop-up shops.

Nomad will showcase handmade and local designers, many of which Goldenberg found via Etsy.com and through her experience vending under the Nomad banner in more traditional booth set-ups since early January. Some of the fashions already on board include beaded stacker bracelets by NYC based Harmony L, minimalist mixed-metal pieces by local Hoboken favorite hbkco., and flowy printed tops by Ya Los Angeles and Mono B.

“I want to build a (mobile) place where my customers – young, creative women – can have fun shopping without breaking the bank,” says Goldenberg, “A place that is convenient and affordable, inspiring and intimate. And of course there should be good music.”

Goldenberg, a filmmaker turned full-time fashionista, graduated from NYU Tisch with a slew of production credits under her belt and a whirlwind of ideas in her head. With Nomad, Goldenberg seeks to combine her artistic eye and love of travel to create a fun and novel shopping experience for customers in the region.

While Nomad will be parked primarily in Hoboken, NJ, this mobile retail boutique will offer private party services, visit local colleges, and vend at NYC Flea Markets and street fairs. Locations for the upcoming week will be posted on the website and advertised via social media.

For more information, or to book a private event with the truck, visit www.thenomadtruck.com.

Anthropologie 4-4-2013 in Hoboken HDR Exterior smaller

Anthropologie located at 412 Washington Street in Hoboken, NJ is even closer to opening than ever. They revealed their exterior yesterday and the façade is quite tastefully done. This anchor store is likely to change the retail landscape of Hoboken for quite some time.  This is one of the most anticipated store openings in recent Hoboken memory.  They are likely to have a Grand Opening or soft opening in April based on the progress I am seeing.

Washington Street Shuffle – Cigar Tobacco Warehouse coming to 614 Washington Street in Hoboken

Cigar Tobacco Warehouse 614 Washington Street Hoboken NJ

The former site of Ibby’s Falafel at 614 Washington Street appears to be switching business type and adding yet another cigar store to Hoboken, NJ. The permits on the door say the new owner of the upcoming establishment is Cigar Tobacco Warehouse. They recently received a large shipment pictured on the bottom left of the photo above.

We once had a short lived Falafel frenzy, is opening a cigar shop going to be the next Hoboken retail trend? Here is wishing them luck as they try to take on Hoboken one luxurious and refined puff at a time.

Holy Strollers – Baby Gap Coming to Hoboken – Washington Street Shuffle Continues

According to signage a Baby Gap is apparently coming to Hoboken’s Washington Street soon. Construction is underway at 220 Washington Street and it appears another chain is coming to Hoboken in addition to Anthropologie. It will be interesting to see how this impacts the other baby themed stores in the Mile Square. With more and more young and in some cases older couples having children it was a matter of time before some baby related chain would try and make a go of it in Hoboken. Parents are staying in Hoboken longer after their first child than say a decade ago so it would seem on paper this is a potentially profitable chain store. Still, with Hoboken’s high rents that is a lot of baby booties to sell to make a buck.

Anastasia’s Accessories in Hoboken Going Out of Business Sale – 30% off

Anastasia’s Accessories, established in 1989 in Hoboken, N.J is unfortunately going out of business. Hurricane Sandy apparently packed too big of a punch for this Hoboken business that lasted 24 years. Here is their note below…

“We are sad to announce that Anastasia’s Accessories sustained significant damage from Hurricane Sandy.
While we managed to save most of our merchandise, our losses were great. Our front door, some inventory, our counter, cabinets, flooring, supplies, furniture, and fixtures were all destroyed or damaged.

Having only rebuilt a year ago from flooding as a result of Hurricane Irene, this time we have decided not to rebuild.

We have had the extreme pleasure of helping you and your friends and family shop for many beautiful items over 24 years and we are offering you one last chance to do so. We are open for business for just a few weeks to liquidate our inventory and display items. Please visit the store, make your final purchases, talk over old times and help us to celebrate 24 amazing years!”

Below is the going out of business sales flier….

Washington Street Shuffle – Smokeless Image is Coming to Hoboken

Filed under: Hoboken,Retail Stores,Shopping,Washington Street — Tags: , , , , — TheBoken @ 3:20 PM

Smokeless Image (www.smokelessimage.com) is coming to Hoboken soon. The storefront will be located at the former Serenity boutique location at 736 Washington Street Hoboken, NJ. The store will offer smokeless tobacco products as an alternative to real smoking. Curious to see how this business does in Hoboken. Perhaps the store will eventually close if the website related business takes off like another Hoboken store recently did. Hey, at least it is not another barber shop, nail salon or falafel place. Here is wishing the new owners luck.
