Local food maven Marley Lynch has another tasting she reviewed for her website as well as TheBoken.com. Read below is you have a hankering for eggplant and arugula pizza….
You’re marching off the PATH…dreary, weak, hungry, and mentally drained. There’s a heavenly pizza sign blazing down at you. Don’t be indecisive. Don’t even think. Go in. Eat pizza. You’ll be very happy you did.
I was invited to Rome Pizzeria & Grill in Hoboken to try four new specialty pies created by Chef Ryan DePersio (NICO, Fascino). Obviously, I said yes. But little did I know I would soon develop an obsession with one Eggplant and Arugula slice…more on that later.
Owner Scott Faherty (above) showed me around as I watched puffy, fresh pizza crusts float in and out of the oven.
The interior is cozy and inviting for a pizza joint – with warm lighting and big, one of a kind paintings of Jimmy Hendrix, Billy Joel, and Frank Sinatra. Some guy even walked in, strolled around the restaurant looking at the paintings like it was a museum. Scott said that’s a normal occurrence at Rome. I was amazed at the sheer willpower not to leave with a slice of pizza…I mean, look at the bubble on this ‘beaut!
I had a slice of each of the new specialty pies. The “Jersey Shore”, the caramelized onions and sweet sausage, the Pancetta and Parmigiana, and the glorious eggplant puree and arugula salad. I wish I could have finished them all; especially the eggplant and arugula. Which was just. Wonderful. I’m still thinking about it. I think I tried to re-name her the “Woodstock” or the “Marley” or something.
The best thing about all of Rome’s pies is the flavor and texture of the crust (which is my litmus test). Definitely some of the best I’ve had in Hoboken. So I will be adding Rome as my “Pizza Emergency” speed dial on my phone. You should, too.
If you’re ever hankering for a plain pie or a slice of something new (ahem eggplant and arugula) – Rome is your place.

Today’s Hoboken Photo of the Day is from Mario’s Classic Pizza’s exterior via HDR technique. Mario has been serving up pizza for years at his 8th and Garden Street location.
The HomeMade Pizza store in Hoboken has been shut down according toThe Boken.com reader and occasional photo contributor Anthony Torres of AST Photos . The Boken.com went down to check it out and the store located at 213 Washington Street in Hoboken is papered over and already advertising it is available for rent. They left this message on the door to the customers of Hoboken that they served for about a year. the message reads as follows:
“We’re sorry to say that our Hoboken store will be closed as of Friday March 16th. Over the last 10 months, your friendship and loyalty have meant a lot to us, so thanks for inviting us into your home. Be on the lookout for our new stores at www.homemadepizza.com”
For whatever reason the business model didn’t seem to work in Hoboken because it seems they are having success in other markets. They did provide an excellent whole wheat crust which distinguished them in terms of pizza dough but apparently that was not enough to drive sales at this location. Feel free to share your thoughts below as to why you think their idea could not make it in Hoboken.
Uptown Pizzeria in Hoboken, at least in the opinion of TheBoken’s editor has the best Sicilian slice in all of Hoboken. TheBoken realizes that taste is subjective but feels strongly that the best Sicilian slice in Hoboken comes from this establishment. This editor had one slice yesterday and it did not disappoint. There are many fine pizza establishments in Hoboken, Benny Tudinos has the largest slice, Seven Star Pizza is also right up there with a very large slice of their own. Some people swear by Napoli’s and Grimaldis as they cook their pizza in traditional ovens fired by wood or coal. New comer Basile’s Pizza has received raves about their unique panko crust and excellent grandma slices and TheBoken concurs but the best Sicilian to date is still at Uptown Pizza IMO.
The sauce is excellent and plentiful with robust flavors that make Uptown Pizzeria the favorite place for Sicilian. TheBoken doesn’t normally make such proclamations but thinks their slice is so exceptional as to warrant praise here. Feel free to share your thoughts on your favorite Sicilian slice below in the comments.

There are no plenty of pizza places and falafel places in the City of Hoboken given the recent openings of Ibby’s Falafel, Mamouns and Basile’s Pizza. TheBoken suspects that this has created some healthy competition between eateries to get your business. The Pita Grill located at 324 Washington Street has this special shown above: a $3 falafel pita that you can dress up for an extra buck with items like Hummus, Tabouleh and Babaganoush.
Below we have a lunch special from Pizza Republic at 406 Washington Street where you get any wrap, fries or salad and a drink for only $6. Now the competition may be good for your wallet in the short term but will this mean there is a enough people and demand for these specials to keep all these eateries running in the black? Time will tell but there is a reason why TheBoken has a column called the Washington Street Shuffle. In the mean time enjoy the savings that such competition tends to foster.
On Saturday 9/10/2011 Basille’s Pizza opened their doors for the first time in Hoboken. This small pizzeria located at 89 Washington Street was already doing a brisk business in a a prime location near the PATH, Carlo’s Bakery and Hoboken City Hall. I had a quick slice and the first thing I noticed was that their crust is different in that they use a panko bread crumb at the bottom to give their slices a crispy texture. TheBoken’s editor does not lay any claims to being a pizza guru to definitively say who has the best regular slice of pizza but the slice certainly hit the spot.

Mario’s Classic Pizza on the corner of 8th and Garden Street in Hoboken just re-opened after their typical end of summer vacation on Monday September 5th with some new additions to the Yankees memorabilia that adorn the pizzeria…
New Baseball Jerseys bats and balls in case
The Mario Broken Bat collection – for non paying customers (just kidding)
New TVs will display the new menu coming soon to the pizzeria
Mario is still running his recession special where for $20 you can buy a card to get $30 worth of food. That’s a pretty good deal in these tough economic times.
Basile’s Pizza is slated to open next week. Granted, Hoboken has its fair share of pizza places but this one is in a prime location of 89 Washington Street given its proximity to the PATH, City Hall and Carlo’s Bakery. The design for this pizza place is also nice and kind of has a retro feel to it. The Boken spoke to the owners and they were very happy with the construction office as well as the Historical Board who were instrumental in getting their approvals. Final inspections are slated for Friday and early next week.
On a historical note I was told that this location was a pizza place 30 years ago before it was converted into a Real Estate office. Nothing like returning to your roots. The owners have pizza places in New York City and this is their first foray in to Hoboken or New Jersey.
Here are some photos of the new pizza place almost ready for business:
