Jo's Diner Hoboken Exterior

Joe’s Diner is now open for business in Hoboken. Located at 219 Washington Street at the site of the former Japanese Restaurant Maru, Jo’s Diner is priming to be a bustling breakfast/luncheonette in a prime location. They have been open about a week and are planning on a schedule of 7am-7pm. They are still in the “soft opening” phase but TheBoken.com was able to pop in and try a few of their lunch/dinner items last week….

The first item was the chicken soup which has a unique feature of having a chicken leg in the bowl. The stock was very thick with a lot similarity in flavor to French onion soup without the cheese and a bit more like chicken broth (of course) . This item will likely be a favorite given its unique home-style flavor and perhaps the novelty of getting to eat part of it with your hands.

Jo's Diner Hoboken Roast Beef Sandwich

The next item was the Roast Beef Sandwich. This sandwich comes with delicious dipping gravy and a pasta salad. The Roast Beef and gravy were excellent but perhaps this could be offered with additional options like French fries, mashed potatoes or even coleslaw. The sandwich itself is definitely worth coming back for.

Below are a few more interior shots of the interior of this family run restaurant. Note that this restaurant is adorned with decorative roosters as a tribute to the mother of the owner Joseph who collected them but recently passed away after a long illness. It is a nice touch to a restaurant that is family owned by a third generation Hobokenite.

There appears to be a new fashion related store named Style Square coming to 730 Washington Street in Hoboken, NJ. The LLC that is behind it is Style Khan LLC and they have a permit for new exterior lighting. It is a matter of time until we have another fashion related retail store on Washington Street.

Papaya Dog Now Open in Hoboken! Hot Diggity Dog!

Papaya Dog is now open in Hoboken at 55 Newark St Hoboken, NJ 07030. This is the second hot dog establishment to recently open up in the area, the other being Windmill hot dogs. Papaya Dog is from the same owner of  Basile’s Pizza and their product closely resembles that of Papaya Dog and Papaya King in New York City with an inexpensive menu. They are running a November special of two hot dogs and a soda for $2.99.

Famous Pizza Now Open on 207 Washington Street in Hoboken

Famous Pizza is now open in Hoboken at 207 Washington Street. I was walking by last night and the new establishment was open and doing what appeared to be a steady amount of business. The pizza place is at the former Pomme Frittes which went on the fritz and was fried after trying to expand to hot dogs and fried oreos. It was a good product but perhaps priced too high and likely did not have the requisite foot traffic for that type of item IMHO.

Famous Pizza was originally going to be famous artichoke pizza but had some reported legal issues and changed their name after the NYC firm with the same name went after them over trademark rights. Last night’s offerings were as follows:

  • Artichoke
  • Magarita
  • Grandma Sicilian
  • Chicken
  • Meatball
  • Pepperoni
  • Chicago Chicken and Broccoli

There are now a plethora of pizza places downtown and all around Hoboken. I wish the new place the best of luck in a crowded pizza market. May the best pie and slice win.

Washington Street Shuffle – Smokeless Image is Coming to Hoboken

Smokeless Image (www.smokelessimage.com) is coming to Hoboken soon. The storefront will be located at the former Serenity boutique location at 736 Washington Street Hoboken, NJ. The store will offer smokeless tobacco products as an alternative to real smoking. Curious to see how this business does in Hoboken. Perhaps the store will eventually close if the website related business takes off like another Hoboken store recently did. Hey, at least it is not another barber shop, nail salon or falafel place. Here is wishing the new owners luck.

Washington Street Shuffle- The Latest on Hoboken’s Premier Retail Street

Here is a the latest update on the ever shifting business landscape on Washington in Hoboken. By no means is it complete and this week’s focus is below 8th Street….

Artichoke Pizza Court?

Famous Artichoke Pizza is set to open up at 207 Washington Street soon at the former Fresh Pommes Frites site but not without its share of controversy. Artichoke Pizza (http://artichokepizza.com/) is a 4 restaurant chain in NYC that is in no way affiliated with this new store opening in Hoboken. It has been reported in local media that two former employees are opening up this store and insist that their name is different as well as the recipe. Expect to potentially see this hit the courts before the grand opening assuming the owner of Artichoke Pizza in NYC can get on the docket.

Matt and Meera Open a BYOB Restaurant

Matt and Meera, located at 618 Washington Street opened up this week in Hoboken and is an Indian inspired restaurant but not Indian. No food review yet but their menu is below in a link. The interior is nicely done and the menu inexpensive based on solely on price. Hopefully Matt and Meera opening a restaurant has a lot more taste than Zack and Miri Make a Porn (actual movie title). We look forward to trying it ourselves and not some contrived quid quo pro “I will work for food” tasting that in no way reflects what the customers will get based on some megalomaniac’s hater blog of retail coercion. You simply can’t trust that source on anything, even food related.

Oh Sweet Serenity! Another Closure on Washington Street

Serenity Boutique, A woman’s and children’s boutique has closed its doors at 736 Washington Street. The world of woman’s clothing store retail is a harsh one with even the venerable Jesse James recently closing as well. Perhaps there is an excess of women’s clothing stores in Hoboken. Then again clothing store Anthology between 7th and 8th on Washington Street seems to consistently do a booming business. Getting the right mix of clothes and the right price point can be difficult. Rent can always be an issue but at the end of the day TheBoken.com believes if  a store can establish the right mix of product at the right prices, it can succeed in Hoboken. Blathering on about parking being the exclusive cause like some other unbalanced blogger in town does is simply is a cop out and shows a lack of business acumen.

TheBoken.com of course is sorry to see this business owner not be able to stay open. Success sometimes comes from failure. Look at Lebron James this year. He had to lose an NBA title before he could win one.

The Sprint Store at 416 Washington Street has signage which usually indicates that the opening could be soon. Yeah, another cell phone store on Washington Street! Yippee!

A Longtime Business Passes On

Hoboken Antiques located at 511 Washington Street recently had their owner Dora Stern pass on after many years in Hoboken as a business.  Medicine Man Pharmacy is slated to replace this store and perhaps pickup as a mid-town replacement to Barron’s Drug which served the Hoboken community well for many years until they sold off their customer list to Walgreen’s Pharmacy.

Washington Street Shuffle – Planet Fitness Construction and More Closings/Openings

Here is a rundown of just some of the recent happenings on Hoboken’s busiest retail street, Washington Street. Feel free to add any other developments in the comments section below…

Tribal Home Finally Closes Rug Store

Tribal Home finally closed its bricks and mortars store down at their temporary location at 706 Washington Street on January 29th, the site of the former Wishing Tree store. They will still run their rug cleaning business but the retail portion of their business will remain online at www.tribalhome.com.

Jesse James Closes Hoboken Store

As reported earlier this week in local media, a fashion icon of a store Jesse James is closing shop to focus on their online business and NYC location. This location in  Hoboken was here since 2006 and women that I know shopped there would swear by their blue jeans not necessarily for price but for cut and fit. TheBoken.com wonders if the closing was due to a pre-emptive part on the ownership since Anthropologie has been said to be coming to Hoboken at the 420 Washington Street location. I wonder how many other women’s clothing retailers will feel the pinch as well when Anthropologie finally opens shop.

The 420 Washington Street storefront facade has been cleaned up and a Halloween popup store named Spirit Halloween came and went. As of today there are no construction permits in the window but it is still anticipated that Anthropologie will still occupy this location sometime in 2012.  Many in Hoboken wanted an Apple Store and Apple did purportedly take a look at the location but did not commit to this location.

Planet Fitness Construction Continues

Planet Fitness had some delays in opening this year and they have pushed back the date for their opening at February 7th according to their most recent customer service letter. As a courtesy people who signed up won’t be billed until March for using the gym as a sign of good faith by the owners of Planet Fitness. This is the site of the former Empire Fitness so people could be understandably weary of any delays but this delay in charging people seems to have created a bit of good will on behalf of future gym members that this company is on the up and up. Hoboken Robin Perches a Bit Higher at 728 Washington Street

Last but not least  Hoboken consignment store Midtown Authentic is doing a Jefferson’s and moving on up to the second floor in the same building the store is currently at. It will not be a deluxe apartment in the sky but will offer more floor space then the basement location. The store is owned by Hoboken’s own Robin and it is felt that this bird derived superhero needed a higher perch than being a cellar dweller. Just saying. Below is Hoboken Robin on the right with one of his future customers, Grandma Wolf. Rumor has it she likes vintage purses.
