Hoboken Photo of the Day – Winter 2014 at Pier A Park

This winter has been an especially brutal one in Hoboken and the surrounding NYC metropolitan area. The term “Artic Vortex” really made a splash in 2014 but of course it was too cold for a real splash for that given the average temperatures in January and February. Depite the cold at least some beauty can come out it as depicted in a recent shot I took at Hoboken’s Pier A Park.

Hoboken St. Patty’s Day Bar Crawl Information

Here is a note from the organizers of Hoboken St. Patrick’s Day Pub Crawl edited slightly for better copy on this website. I publishing this here as information that visitors of Hoboken and participating residents could actually use but keep this is not necessarily an endorsment of the downside effects of binge drinking on the first Saurday of March every year with or without the parade.  Several years ago the parade was put on hold after the Mayor wanted it moved to a weekday since that  cancellation of the St. Patrick’s Day parade the number of incidents has gone down and the party has been more localised downtown.  TheBoken.com is all about celebration and certainly does not Hoboken to become a dry town but would just encourage revelers to have fun and be responsible and respectful to our city and have fun. If you or a frend get too drunk cut yourself off or them and get home or to the apartment you are visiting. Try to avoid an emergency room visit at all costs. Now on to the annual St. Patty’s Day Pub Crawl message…..

“Keep the tradition going strong! That’s exactly what we’re here to do. The phenomenon that takes hold of Hoboken every single March is quickly approaching. Not only is the weather going to get a little warmer, it is the perfect way to get the party started for St Patrick’s Day – a real pre – St. Paddy’s day event! The first Saturday of March is a special day in Hoboken, NJ. Not only do all of the great bars and venues in Hoboken collaborate on a star-studded event, this year the “All Access Pass” is the one package you’ll need in order to spend the entire day in excitement. Join organizers this Saturday March 1 during their annual St. Paddy’s Celebration as Hoboken unites in solidarity to offer a great package for those who wish to celebrate in style and tradition. It’s been a long winter and at HobokenStPatricksDay.com, we are all definitely ready for the spring to come and the St. Patrick’s Day festivities to get under way.

All of the hottest bars in Hoboken will be flooded for this year’s annual Saint Paddy’s Celebration – so make sure you’re ready! With the “All Access Pass” package, you’ll be able to visit the best route of venues throughout the entire day. The times might surprise you – starting at 10AM? Yep! That’s what Hoboken and the first Saturday in March is famous for. Keep the tradition going strong and make sure to get up early and support the Hoboken community during the great holiday of St. Patrick’s Day. This is what it’s all about – fun in the streets, socializing with your closest friends and co-workers, and rejoicing in celebration. You’ve probably been to Hoboken before but you might not be prepared for the festivities that take place on the streets of Hoboken during this joyous occasion. Gather your friends and come out to enjoy a full day of partying and revel with the ultimate party experience in Hoboken, the All Access Pass!

Hoboken St. Pats Flyer 3-1-2014

With the “All Access Pass”, you register at the location that you choose (your starting point). You’ll receive a wristband, entitling you to reduced admission to all of the participating venues. Mayor Zimmer to Recognize Hoboken’s First Leed Platinum

Residental Building at 1pm Today

Edge Lofts Hoboken Platinum Leed Certifed

Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer will participate in a ceremony on Thursday, December 19th at 1 p.m. to recognize Edge Lofts being awarded LEED® Platinum Certification by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) for achievement in green homebuilding and design.  Edge Lofts is the first residential building in Hoboken to receive LEED® Platinum certification — the highest level in USGBC’s LEED for Homes program.  The ceremony will bet at 1422 Grand Street in Hoboken, NJ.

Joining Mayor Zimmer will be principals of developer Bijou Properties and Steven Winter, former Chairman of the USGBC.  The event will include details on the boutique rental building’s sustainable design, the importance of green development in urban settings and Bijou Properties’ ongoing efforts to promote a healthier lifestyle and cleaner environment within the City.

Edge Lofts has been designed and built to raise the bar for sustainable design and building practices in Hudson County and beyond.  The building’s south façade will be covered by a living wall of ivy to provide thermal, acoustical and aesthetic benefits, while architectural sunshades reduce direct sun absorption at the southern corners.  A 25kW (kilowatt) photovoltaic array produces onsite clean energy to offset common area energy use.    Edge Lofts’ 35 residences — which are fully leased — include fresh air filtration systems, open cell spray foam insulation for maximum air and moisture control, superior sound insulation, zero VOC paint, reclaimed antique oak flooring, kitchen and bathroom tiles made with recycled contents, and Frigidaire Energy Star® appliances.  The building is also Energy Star® Certified and is a 100% smoke-free environment.

Bijou Properties designs, develops & manages the highest quality sustainable buildings and has become a recognized leader in the field of green development along the Hudson Waterfront.  Recent projects include Garden Street Lofts (NJ’s First LEED® Gold Residential Highrise) and The Hostess Factory, a 42,000 square-foot retail restoration including a 20,000 square-foot Green Roof.  Currently under construction is Park Place, a 12-story building located at 1415 Park Avenue on the north end of Hoboken that will feature 212 rental residences, 13,000 square feet of retail space, 32,000 square feet of educational space and a six level parking garage. The $131-million project was designed to achieve LEED® Gold certification.  The project recently received a 2013 Smart Growth Gold Award from the Hudson County Planning Board.

Hoboken Police Department Get New Vehicles and Uniforms

Other blogs claim they give you the good the bad and the ugly when all they really do is give you the ugly, paid for ugly. If you know what website I am referring to then no need to mention it here. Here is some more good news from the Mayor’s office just one week before an election….

The City of Hoboken announces:

HOBOKEN POLICE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES NEW VEHICLES & UNIFORMS
Mayor Zimmer and Police new equipment uniforms
Left to right: Police Officer Willie Montanez, Police Chief Anthony Falco, Detective Vince Lombardi, Mayor Dawn Zimmer, Sergeant John Petrosino, Police Officer Robert Truppner
Mayor Dawn Zimmer was joined by Police Chief Anthony Falco, Sergeant John Petrosino, President of the Hoboken Police Superior Officers, and Detective Vince Lombardi, President of Hoboken Policemen’s Benevolent Association and Police Officers Willie Montanez and Robert Truppner to display the Hoboken Police Department’s newly purchased vehicles and new uniforms.
“Our Police Department is always there for our community when we need them most,” said Mayor Dawn Zimmer. “They deserve to be as well-equipped and prepared as possible to do their jobs and keep us safe, and I thank our Police Officers for partnering with us on investing in their new uniforms.”
“This is a big morale booster for our department,” said Police Chief Falco. “The new uniforms have the full support of our rank-and-file, meet the needs of professionalism and utility, and are more adaptable for the daily rigors of the job.”
“The steady hiring of new officers, ongoing replacement of our aging patrol vehicles, renovations of police headquarters, approval of new work uniforms, and future K9 unit are just a few of many positive and progressive endeavors supported by the mayor, and we thank her for her strong commitment to public safety.” said Detective Lombardi, President of Hoboken Policemen’s Benevolent Association. “Protecting the public and keeping the peace is our purpose, and Mayor Zimmer has proven our purpose is her priority.”
The Police Department recently acquired one 15-seat Ford Econovan, two Ford Interceptors, two Ford Explorers and four Harley Davidson Road King motorcycles. As of this week, the Police Department also has a new uniform more appropriate for patrol work – the first comprehensive revisiting of uniform policy in recent history.
“After three years of careful planning, the Hoboken Police Department’s uniform motorized patrol are now wearing BDUs, the more casual and community-friendly uniform,” said Sergeant Petrosino, President of the Hoboken Police Superior Officers. “Hopefully this change will bring the residents and the officers closer together, by making their appearance seem more approachable, rather than authoritative. With the new additions to our fleet and our brand new uniform change, the citizens of Hoboken will now not only have one of the most professional and well educated officers in the county, but also one of the better equipped. The residents of Hoboken deserve nothing less.”

Fright Night Movies at Maxwell’s in Hoboken Saturday November 2 8pm

The regular music might not be a Maxwell’s of Hoboken anymore but a night of two horror horror movies awaits those not of the faint of heart coming this Saturday…..

Fright Night Movies at Maxwell’s

Saturday November 2nd

A scary double feature:  The original Night of the Living Dead and Tod Browning’s Freaks

Double Feature begins at 8pm – Admission is $5.00

Address: 1039 Washington Street, Hoboken

Night of the Living Dead Hoboken 11-2-2013 at Maxwells

Night of the Living Deadthe original, 1968, black-&-white,  American, independent, classic, horror film directed by George A. Romero.

The dead come back to life & eat the living in this low budget film. Several people barricade themselves inside a rural house in an attempt to survive the night. Outside are hordes of relentless, shambling zombies who can only be killed by a blow to the head.

The film  was heavily criticized at its release owing to explicit content, but eventually garnered critical acclaim and has been selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry as a film deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.”

Five years after its premiere, Paul McCullough of Take One, observed that Night of the Living Dead was the “most profitable horror film ever [...] produced outside the walls of a major studio”. The film had earned between $12 and $15 million at the American box office after a decade. It was translated into more than 25 languages and released across Europe, Canada and Australia. It grossed $30 million internationally, and the Wall Street Journal reported that it was the top grossing film in Europe in 1969.

More than 40 years after its release, the film enjoys a reputation as a classic and still receives positive reviews; Night of the Living Dead currently holds a 96% “Certified Fresh” rating on the review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes, and it is regarded by many as one of the best films of 1968. The New York Times placed the film on their Best 1000 Movies Ever list.  In January 2010, Total Film included the film on its list of The 100 Greatest Movies of All Time. Rolling Stone magazine named Night of the Living Dead one of The 100 Maverick Movies in the Last 100 Years.

It was awarded two distinguished honors decades after its debut. The Library of Congress added the film to the National Film Registry in 1999 with other films deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant”. In 2001, the film was ranked No. 93 by the American Film Institute on their AFI’s 100 Years . . . 100 Thrills list, a list of America’s most heart-pounding movies. The Chicago Film Critics Association named it the 5th scariest film ever made.  The film also ranked No. 9 on Bravo’s The 100 Scariest Movie Moments.

Freaks is a 1932 American Pre-Code horror film about sideshow performers,
directed & produced by Tod Browning.  with a cast mostly composed of actual carnival performers. The film was based on Tod Robbins‘ 1923 short fiction story “Spurs“. Director Browning took the exceptional step of casting real people with deformities, rather than using costumes and makeup.

Browning had been a member of a traveling circus in his early years, and much of the film was drawn from his personal experiences. In the film, the physically deformed sideshow performers are inherently trusting and honorable people, while the real monsters are two of the “normal” members of the circus who conspire to murder one of the performers to obtain his large inheritance.

At the time of its release, despite extensive cuts, the film was negatively received by audiences, and remained an object of extreme controversy. Browning, famed at the time for his collaborations with Lon Chaney and for directing Bela Lugosi in Dracula (1931), had trouble finding work afterward, and this effectively brought his career to an early close. Beginning in the early 1960s, Freaks was rediscovered as a counterculture cult film, and throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the film was regularly shown at midnight movie screenings at several movie theaters in the United States.  In 1994, Freaks was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”. It was ranked 15th on Bravo TV’s list of the 100 Scariest Movie Moments.
