Hoboken Photo of the Day – Winter 2014 at Pier A Park

This winter has been an especially brutal one in Hoboken and the surrounding NYC metropolitan area. The term “Artic Vortex” really made a splash in 2014 but of course it was too cold for a real splash for that given the average temperatures in January and February. Depite the cold at least some beauty can come out it as depicted in a recent shot I took at Hoboken’s Pier A Park.

Hoboken St. Patty’s Day Bar Crawl Information

Here is a note from the organizers of Hoboken St. Patrick’s Day Pub Crawl edited slightly for better copy on this website. I publishing this here as information that visitors of Hoboken and participating residents could actually use but keep this is not necessarily an endorsment of the downside effects of binge drinking on the first Saurday of March every year with or without the parade.  Several years ago the parade was put on hold after the Mayor wanted it moved to a weekday since that  cancellation of the St. Patrick’s Day parade the number of incidents has gone down and the party has been more localised downtown.  TheBoken.com is all about celebration and certainly does not Hoboken to become a dry town but would just encourage revelers to have fun and be responsible and respectful to our city and have fun. If you or a frend get too drunk cut yourself off or them and get home or to the apartment you are visiting. Try to avoid an emergency room visit at all costs. Now on to the annual St. Patty’s Day Pub Crawl message…..

“Keep the tradition going strong! That’s exactly what we’re here to do. The phenomenon that takes hold of Hoboken every single March is quickly approaching. Not only is the weather going to get a little warmer, it is the perfect way to get the party started for St Patrick’s Day – a real pre – St. Paddy’s day event! The first Saturday of March is a special day in Hoboken, NJ. Not only do all of the great bars and venues in Hoboken collaborate on a star-studded event, this year the “All Access Pass” is the one package you’ll need in order to spend the entire day in excitement. Join organizers this Saturday March 1 during their annual St. Paddy’s Celebration as Hoboken unites in solidarity to offer a great package for those who wish to celebrate in style and tradition. It’s been a long winter and at HobokenStPatricksDay.com, we are all definitely ready for the spring to come and the St. Patrick’s Day festivities to get under way.

All of the hottest bars in Hoboken will be flooded for this year’s annual Saint Paddy’s Celebration – so make sure you’re ready! With the “All Access Pass” package, you’ll be able to visit the best route of venues throughout the entire day. The times might surprise you – starting at 10AM? Yep! That’s what Hoboken and the first Saturday in March is famous for. Keep the tradition going strong and make sure to get up early and support the Hoboken community during the great holiday of St. Patrick’s Day. This is what it’s all about – fun in the streets, socializing with your closest friends and co-workers, and rejoicing in celebration. You’ve probably been to Hoboken before but you might not be prepared for the festivities that take place on the streets of Hoboken during this joyous occasion. Gather your friends and come out to enjoy a full day of partying and revel with the ultimate party experience in Hoboken, the All Access Pass!

Hoboken St. Pats Flyer 3-1-2014

With the “All Access Pass”, you register at the location that you choose (your starting point). You’ll receive a wristband, entitling you to reduced admission to all of the participating venues. Each guest only needs 1 All Access Pass in order to participate in the event. You will also receive a full map of Hoboken’s best venues to visit during the day. Over 30 venues are participating in this year’s Hoboken St Patrick’s Day Celebration.

Participating Venues Include: Mills Tavern, The Shannon, Biggies, Hoboken Bar & Grill, 10th & Willow, Bahama Mama, Texas Arizona, BOA, Cadillac Cantina, The Dubliner, Room 84, Scotland Yard, Wicked Wolf Tavern, Havana Cafem, Hotel Victor, Marty O’Briens, McSwiggans, Mulligan’s, Nag’s Head, Basile’s Pizza, The Brass Rail, Black Bear Bar, 1 Republik, Arthur’s Tavern, Louise & Jerry’s Tavern, Trinity Bar, The Farside, Stinky Sullivan’s, Mikie Squared Bar, Moran Pub, Stewed Cow, West Five Supperclub, Village Pourhouse, Willie McBrides, Finnegan’s, Turtle Club, McMahons Brownstone Ale House, Madison Bar, and City Bistro.”

Planet Mac – New Restaurant Provides Many Varieties of Mac and Cheese for the Hoboken Palette

Planet Mac Hoboken Logo

Planet Mac just opened up about a week and a half ago at 219 Washington Street in Hoboken. The former site of the short-lived Joe’s Diner and before that the Japanese Restaurant Maru, Planet Mac is poised to be a comfort food haven for everyday eating as well as late night revelers with its numerous varierties of Mac and Cheese and even burgers. The menu consists of mainly Mac and Cheese (13 options plus make your own) in three celestially named sizes, Venus, Jupiter, Galaxy. There are also salads, soups, Mac Balls as well as a Mac and Cheese Cheesteak andPlanetary Burger specials to round out the menu.

TheBoken.com had a chance to speak to the owner and found out that they are a standalone business (not a franchise) and that they are excited to serve Hoboken with the vibrant city it is. This in spite of a negative article by a nefarious blog filled with a sense of self-importance and defined by its negativity (any guesses?).  Clearly anyone with a brain knows this establishment is not a by product of the low carb lifestyle (after all mac and cheese is predominantly pasta) but rather the comfort food trend that has its niche in NYC in recent years. For a modest upcharge both whole wheat pasta, for those watching glycmic indexes and gluten free for those with that type of allergy are available as well as traditional pasta.

I for one found the food that I sampled and paid for to be of good to excellent quality and the Taco Mac to be quite flavorfull as a take home item. The restaurnat hours are Sunday – Thursday 11am-11pm and Friday and Saturday 11am-4am. The Friday and Saturday times are clearly aimed at the late night downtown crowd. They will be open just in time for Leprecaun this year.  I will be curious to see how much pasta they go through on Saturday March 1st. Delivery is available too by calling 201-752-6386 (1-201-PlanetMac). More pictures, commentary and menu below…..

Planet Mac Cheeseburger Balls

The Bacon Cheeseburger Mac Balls- Tasty as all hell but if I ate these everyday

I would need an electric mobility scooter to get around.

Planet Mac Hoboken Saturn Burger

The Saturn Special Hamburger – with fresh onion rings for a twist.

Planet Mac Hoboken Salad

And a fresh salad to balance things out.

And finally the first edition of their menu……

Sinatra Park Walkway Ribbon Cutting 1-31-2014

Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer was joined this afternoon by Stevens Institute of Technology President Nariman Farvardin, Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise, Freeholder Anthony L. Romano, and members of the community to cut the ribbon to open a portion of the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway. The walkway between Sinatra Park and Castle Point Park includes a section completed by the Stevens Institute of Technology and a rebuilt section of walkway around Sinatra Field.

“With the opening of this walkway, Hoboken now has a continuous waterfront multiuse path from the Jersey City border to our skate park at Castle Point for our active community to enjoy,” said Mayor Dawn Zimmer. “Thanks to decades of work by committed activists, our waterfront is already the envy of the state. I look forward during the next few months to working with the community to redesign central Sinatra Drive into a safe and attractive destination for everyone to enjoy.”

“The entire Stevens community is proud and excited to commemorate the long-awaited opening of this portion of the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway,” said Dr. Nariman Farvardin, President of Stevens Institute of Technology. “We are especially thankful for the leadership of Senator Bob Menendez, Congressman Albio Sires and County Executive Tom DeGise for their strong advocacy in support of funding for this walkway.  This project will enhance public access to the beautiful Hudson River waterfront for our community as well as our Hoboken neighbors.”

Enterprise CarShare Expands To Hoboken and Jersey City

Hoboken first had Zip Cars, then Hertz Corner Cars, and Enteprise Rentals is expanding their CarShare program to Hoboken and Jersey City. Read below for details…..

Enterprise CarShare Expands To New Jersey

Enterprise Car Share Hoboken Jersey City

Enterprise CarShare today announced the launch of its services in Hoboken, N.J., and Jersey City, N.J. Expansion into both markets underscores the company’s rapid growth in the New York City metro area. Since June, Enterprise CarShare has doubled its fleet in New York City, and membership has increased in the metro area by nearly 50 percent.

Today, Enterprise CarShare is available on more than 75 university campuses and 40 government and business campuses and in nearly 20 major markets including New York, Boston, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Chicago.

“Our expansion into New Jersey will provide even more area commuters with a car share option that features up-to-date vehicles and first-rate customer service,” said Ryan Johnson, assistant vice president of Enterprise CarShare. “As urbanization continues, car sharing plays an increasingly significant role in serving local transportation needs, and our service is poised for continued growth throughout the entire region.”

New Jersey CarShare users will have access to nearly ten types of vehicles, ranging from economy cars to minivans and SUVs. Additionally, for a limited time, Enterprise is offering to waive the application fee and one-year membership charge for any New Jersey CarShare members. New members will also receive $15 in driving credits.

“Because our car-sharing services are part of Enterprise Rent-A-Car, we have access to newer, cleaner and well-maintained vehicles and offer a lower member-to-car ratio than any other car rental or car-sharing company,” said Johnson.

Enterprise CarShare is a cost-effective alternative to car ownership, an environmentally-friendly supplement to public transit and, since it’s backed by Enterprise’s award-winning customer service, delivers convenience and reliability to members in select markets across the country.

More information is available by visiting www.enterprisecarshare.com, the Enterprise CarShare Facebook page, or by following @carshare on Twitter.

About Enterprise CarShare:

Enterprise CarShare is a natural extension of the local car rental service that Enterprise Rent-A-Car pioneered more than 55 years ago. Enterprise CarShare offers a variety of clean, well-maintained vehicles at an affordable price, when and where customers need them, whether it is for an hour, a day, a weekend or longer. In 2011, Enterprise entered a major retail car-sharing market for the first time by acquiring PhillyCarShare in Philadelphia, and then, in 2012, it acquired Mint Cars On-Demand in Boston and New York City. In May 2013, Enterprise acquired the business of IGO CarSharing, the first car-sharing program in Chicago, and in September 2013 launched in Washington, D.C.
