Sponsored by a Hoboken City Councilman some say is full of gas metaphorically speaking and certainly no old fart but part of the “Old Guard”,  here is a Hoboken charity event that has literally exploded on the scene, is a full colon blowout and promises to be such a gas (and for a good cause)…..

Hoboken Volunteers Chili Contest February 2013

Bring your taste buds and best beer-drinking buds to the Elks Lodge, located at 1005 Washington St. on Saturday, February 23, 2013 from 2-6pm for a competition that will make you sweat! This year’s proceeds will go to TRUE Mentors, Hoboken’s only one-to-one mentoring program for children ages 7-17. TRUE Mentors is a community based organization that provides local classes and events to support and engage the community.  Enjoy live music by Gravy Train, chili and beer samples and a heated competition! For the first time ever, (Drum roll, please…)

Meat-eaters won’t be the only ones having all the fun…

They are including a vegetarian-only category! All competitions are FREE to enter.

Can’t make it to Europe this summer? Get a taste of some of its finest features, right here in town!

Join Hoboken Volunteers on Wednesday August 1st, 2012 at 7 pm at the rooftop of the Dubliner, 1st and River Streets in Hoboken, for the 10th Annual Belgian Beer Night!  Sip on a rich and flavor awakening assortment of Belgian style beers, generously donated by the Boulder Beer company, as your mind slips away to another country.

A donation of $20 is suggested. Full cash bar available. 100% of the proceeds will benefit Hoboken Volunteers.

Editor’s Note: While Hoboken Volunteers consist of many fine volunteers that want to help the community and do so with no strings attached, the origin of this organization initially was to promote an inexperienced politician named 4th Ward Councilman Tim Occhipiniti. His handlers figured this would be a way to get his name out there. His recent voting record also speaks for itself.

With that said TheBoken.com in no way discourages people from participating in events like these since they are fun and probably raise charitable dollars that would otherwise not be raised just like Party with Purpose. TheBoken.com recommends that if you can’t make events like these that you give directly to Hoboken charities directly. Some worthy charities that serve Hoboken residents include: Jubilee Center, Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance, Hoboken Shelter, Boys and Girls Club, YMCA, True Mentors, and many others as well. This will ensure that the money you give goes directly should you not have a penchant for partying. If I left any charities off please feel free to add in the comments below.

No doubt Hoboken Volunteers adds value to the community, in terms of awareness and fundraising but people should understand its origins and know that while it is fun to party with purpose, when you give direct it is the most efficient way to see your charity dollar put to use.

With that said, TheBoken.com likes Belgian Beer and this event looks very good for the beer lover.

h-Mag Mixer This Thursday June 21st 7-11pm at Cooper’s Union Hoboken

For the month of June the bi-monthly magazine h-Mag is having their monthly mixer at Cooper’s Union this Thursday June 21st from 7pm to 11pm. This promises to be a barrel of fun (pun intended) and proceeds from donations will benefit The Gateway Mural Project. There will be free appetizers and drink specials at this mixer as well. Cooper’s Union is located right next to the Hoboken Police Headquarters at 104 Hudson Street so make sure you behave when you leave.

Volunteers Needed for Rock’n 4 Autism Concert April 28th 2-6pm

HOPES CAP, an advocate for Hudson County children is teaming up with Hoboken Volunteers to host their second annual Autism Awareness Concert at Hoboken’s Rue School Gym at 310 Garden Street in Hoboken April 26th 2-6pm. they need volunteers to help with the setup and more information on the event is below….

Rock’n Volunteer for the 2nd Annual Rock’n 4 Autism Awareness Concert

Hosted by HOPES CAP, Inc., Saturday, April 28th 2-6pm

The Association for Science in Autism Treatment, along with Hoboken-based, HOPES CAP, Inc., is hosting the 2nd Annual Rock’n 4 Autism Awareness Concert on Saturday, April 28th from 2-6pm.

Volunteers are needed to assist with preparations, donation recruitment, hanging signs, children’s entertainment, ushering, raffle sales, and set-up and clean-up at the Rue School Gym, where the event itself will be held at 301 Garden Street Hoboken. In addition to promoting autism awareness and education about best practices in autism treatment, the concert will include a variety of entertainment and family-friendly activities. We anticipate a wonderful fun-filled afternoon for everyone. Attendees will enjoy:

  • Two sets of Hoboken’s very own Fuzzy Lemons, (a popular children’s rock band)
  • A guest appearance by NY Jets player, Mike DeVito, for autographs and pictures
  • Opportunities to bid on silent auction items including a NY Jets signed football, a Shipyard Pool Pass, & dozens of other items
  • Child-centered activities, including indoor & outdoor games, face painting, a bouncy house, & arts’n crafts!

A $10 minimum donation at the door is requested for this worthy cause.

Hoboken Volunteers’ 3rd Annual Chili Cook-Off

For a Cause and Homebrewing Competition

Things are about to get hot and spicy this winter as Hoboken Volunteers stirs up the pot for some delicious competition. To support Hoboken charity HOPES and Community Action Partnership, Inc. and their adult services, Hoboken Volunteers, with Zog Sports as their headline sponsor, is hosting its 3rd Annual Chili Cook-Off & Homebrewing Contest on February 25th from 2pm-6pm at the Elks Lodge in Hoboken, NJ.

HOPES CAP, Inc., according to their mission statement, was created to provide community services that respond to the social, educational and training needs of its residents in an effort to overcome barriers and fight the causes of poverty.  This event will raise money for the organization and their adult services.

“Through this program,” said Marisa Musachio, director of the program operations at HOPES (Hoboken Organization against Povery and Economic Stress) CAP, Inc. said, “low income clients will achieve personal, professional, and educational self-sufficiency goals.  The programs include teaching computer literacy, financial education, and a class on life skills.”

Along with a day of community bonding, fundraising and experiencing some of the best chili and beer in Hoboken, of course, prizes for Best Judged and Fan Favorite for both chili and home-brewer competitions will be awarded.  Over $2,200 in prizes and gift certificates from local businesses will be awarded to the winners. This year’s judges include Peter Genovese, the Star Ledger reporter known for the famous Munchmobile, Anthony Pino, the owner of Bin14 and Anthony David’s and Ginger Zee from Good Morning America.

Last year, the event raised approximately $3,500 for the Eric LeGrand Believe Fund, which contributed to the medical bills of a Rutgers football player who was paralyzed during a game in 2010.

This year’s event is bringing the heat more than ever with over 25 chili contestants and more than 15 different home brewed beers!  Tickets are $25 per person and include chili and beer samplings.  For more information on the event or the organization, please visit www.hobokenvolunteers.com.

Hoboken Volunteer’s 3rd Annual Chili Cook-Off February 25th 2-6PM

Hoboken Volunteers’s 3rd Annual Chili Cook-Off and Homebrewing Competition is quickly approaching and they  are looking for volunteers to help them spread the word on the street, literally.  On Saturday, February 11th at 11am, they will be hanging posters around town.  If you are interested in helping, please email Erin Muller at emuller@ringlerassociates.com.
