About Hudson County CASA:

HCCASA serves children from across Hudson County. A non-profit organization located in Jersey City, HCCASA is part of a state network. Nationally, there are more than 1,000 CASA programs working in local communities.

HCCASA volunteers are appointed by family court judges to watch over and advocate for abused and neglected children, to make sure these children don’t get lost in the overburdened legal and social service system or languish in an inappropriate group or foster home. They stay with each case until it is closed, and the child is placed in a safe, permanent home.

There are currently more than 60 volunteers donating their time and energy as advocates to HCCASA. Our volunteers represent a true cross section of the community: active and retired professionals who have worked in a variety of industries, business owners, and graduate students, of all ages and ethnic backgrounds.

Hoboken Baby Parade Sunday May 20 1pm at Sinatra Park

Hoboken Baby Parade 2012On  Sunday, May 20, at 1 p.m. the 11th Annual Hoboken Baby Parade will be held sponsored by the Hoboken Historical Museum. This event is intended to help residents celebrate the spirit and creativity of Hoboken’s families. The parade begins at Sinatra Park—located at Fifth Street and the Hudson River—and proceeds south along the waterfront to Pier A. The parade is free and registration begins at noon. (In case of spring showers, a rain date is scheduled for Sunday,June 3rd.)

Parents are encouraged to dress up their babies, toddlers and older siblings—and, of course, themselves and their strollers. Trophies are awarded for Best Dressed Child, Most Creative Carriage, and Best Dressed Family.

The Parade’s roots extend to the early 20th century. It originated as a way for the public health authorities to identify and extend basic health services to newly arrived families or families with newborns. It’s still a great way for local family-oriented businesses to reach out to new parents; call the Museum at 201-656-2240 for more information, or email education@hobokenmuseum.org.

D’s Soul Full Cafe 2011 Holiday Toy Drive Runs until 12/17/2011!

Here is a special note from Stephen Bailey, owner of D’s Soul Full Cafe a midtown eatery in Hoboken that has sponsored artists, musicians and now a toy drive for the kids in the area for the holidays. Read below to see if you can help out….

D’s Soul Full Cafe’s

2011 Holiday Toy Drive

‘Tis the season to think of others. Yeah, yeah, it’s great to get gifts, but we think it’s even better to give. And nothing beats the smile of a kid getting a toy that he or she may not have gotten without the generosity of good people. People like you (yes we are flattering you to get you to give).

It’s time for D’s annual Holiday Toy Drive for the Boys & Girls Club (http://www.bgchc.org/) of Hudson County!

Please bring a new, unwrapped gift to D’s Soul Full Cafe (918 Willow Ave, Hoboken  http://www.dssoulfullcafe.com ) by Saturday 12/17 at 3:00PM. We’ll keep the gifts snug under our tree until one of our merry elves delivers them to the local Boys & Girls Club in Hoboken.

The Boys & Girls Club works to inspire and enable young people from disadvantaged circumstances to realize their full potential. They try to reach children at an early age to provide them with positive alternatives to youth crime, gang membership, drugs, and other negative influences.

You can help this holiday season with a simple yet meaningful gesture of a gift for a boy or girl. Ages of the kids range from 5 to 15 and they’ll like games, arts & crafts, footballs, basketballs and (of course) video games, but all gifts are welcome.

Happy Holidays!

Stephen Bailey, Owner

D’s Soul Full Cafe

918 Willow Ave Hoboken, NJ 07030

TheBoken.com suggestion: Go to the local store Big Fun located between 6th and 7th on Washington Street to pick up a toy for a child. They have great toys and it can be a two for one where help out a local kid and a local business at the same time. Radio Shack also has  a good selection of remote controlled vehicles this time of the year.

Elysian Charter Students Create Video Encouraging a Junk Food Free Halloween

Filed under: City Of Hoboken News — Tags: , — TheBoken @ 10:15 AM

Elysian Charter

Latest Video in Series of Award-Winning Productions to be Released on 10.28

As a way to combat the upcoming junk food season of Halloween, Elysian’s fourth grade students are producing the third in a series of original music videos focused on promoting good nutrition.

In their latest video production called “Purple Pedal Power Berry Bicycle Blender”, the children perform an original rap song which details a “junk food exchange” program in which students trade in their Halloween candy in return for healthy snacks and pedal away pounds on a blender bicycle that makes fruit smoothies.   The music video’s song was written by Elysian’s resident music instructor, Aram Rubenstein-Gillis and is performed by the 32 children in the fourth grade.  The children filmed and edited their latest music video –which will feature choreography, costumes and animation — this past Friday in and around Hoboken.  The video is scheduled to debut on the Elysian Charter School’s You Tube Channel, Facebook Page and web site on October 28, 2010 just before the Halloween revelry begins in Hoboken.

Elysian Charter School’s history of producing award-winning music videos began in 2009 when the school entered the “National Farm to School Network’s” You Tube Contest and bested hundreds of schools across the country with “Who Put That Burger on your Plate?” video, which showcased how food comes from the farm to the table. In 2010, Elysian placed second in the same competition with its “I Fell in Love with Broccoli.” video (see links below).  Collectively, the Elysian videos have more than 10,000 YouTube views and have become a mini-Internet sensation!  From these experiences, Elysian students developed a mission  to promote healthy nutrition for kids by creating a full series of music videos (ideally up to 12) that feature fun upbeat music and lyrics to drive awareness of how healthy eating can be fun and rewarding.

Sneak Preview of Pier C in Hoboken

Dawn_Zimmer Hoboken

We got a last minute invitation from the city of Hoboken to attend a soft-opening on Pier C on Sinatra Drive and 4th Street in Hoboken.  The invite went out to only a couple people in Hoboken including 20 children, their parents, city council members and surrounding new reporters and internet blogs.

Here at The Boken Online we jump on opportunities such as this one and we were their at 5:30pm to join Mayor Zimmer in the opening of the fence that said “DO NOT ENTER”.

As soon as the fence opened the children ran to the first area of the new pier that has a mini water park and plenty of fun bouncy rides.  As Mayor Zimmer supervised the children, Councilwomen Mason and Councilman Lenz continued walking around the pier to check out the different attractions.

Beth_Mason Hoboken

The first thing I noticed was all the equipment on the pier was made of stainless steel metal!  A memory that comes to my mind are the days at my hometown playground back in the 1990’s and burning my butt on the one metal slide in the park!  I said to my self, Why in the hell would the developer of this playground/pier make all the equipment metal?

When I asked Councilwomen Mason about the metal equipment she mentioned, the developer should have know that metal is probably the worst material to use for playground equipment and the city council will attempt to work with the developer to solve the issue.  Councilwomen Mason did seem very excited for the pier to open so the residents of Hoboken can enjoy it during the summer months.

Get an exclusive video tour of Pier C here:

Mayor Dawn Zimmer was testing out the new equipment herself as she walked around the pier with the children and as she slid down the new 30 foot slide that is located on the south side of the pier.  Mayor Zimmer mentioned that the pier still has a decent amount of work to be completed such at new railings that are on order that need be properly installed.  Mayor Zimmer also said canopies need to be installed above the new equipment to prevent any burn injuries.

Hoboken_Pier C

Jennifer Maier, the Director of Evironmental Services mentioned “the city plans on opening the pier as soon as the railing are completed and the city council votes on the installation of the shade canopies”.  Naire also said, “if all goes as planned the pier should be open to the public by mid August”.

The Boken wants to thank the City of Hoboken, Mayor Zimmer and the City Council for the opportunity to get onto the new pier and take some pictures.

Check out more photos of Pier C here in this slide show:

We look forward to the opening of the new Pier C this summer.
