Photo of the Day–US Navy Blimp over Manhattan

Today’s photo of the day is of the US Navy Blimp over Manhattan. Below is a shot that has it near the new World Trade Center currently under construction for context. This blimp was spotted on the evening commute on the Hudson River around 5:45pm. What a beautiful day it was and although it was a tad chilly.

I saw this blimp while I was driving along the West side highway…what a sight! My father was part of U.S. Navy flight crews that flew blimps in the early 1950's as part of the Navy's anti-submarine warfare effort. He's now 80 years old and often expresses what a shame it is that so little seems to have been preserved from the blimp era….wish he could have been with me when I saw it.
