City of Hoboken Renews Call for Volunteers to Grow CERT Team

HOBOKEN RENEWS CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS TO GROW

COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM (CERT)

Interested Community Members Invited to Apply for Training

Following Hurricane Sandy, there has been a tremendous increase in community interest in the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). As a result, the City is restarting the training program, which began the week before Hurricane Sandy, and inviting community members interested in volunteering to apply.

“Our CERT members were a crucial part of keeping our community safe during Hurricane Sandy,” said Mayor Dawn Zimmer. “We want to expand our team so we can be in an even stronger position to protect our community going forward.”

In order to accommodate the increased interest, the location for the training has been changed from the Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance Corps to the Elks Club, located at 1005 Washington Street.

CERT training promotes a partnering effort between emergency services and the people that they serve. The goal is for emergency personnel to train members of neighborhoods, community organizations, or workplaces in basic response skills. CERT members are then integrated into the emergency response capability for their area.

If a disastrous event overwhelms or delays the community’s professional response, CERT members can assist others by applying the basic response and organizational skills that they learned during training. These skills can help save and sustain lives following a disaster until help arrives. CERT skills also apply to daily emergencies.

If interested in joining CERT, please download and complete the application (www.hobokennj.org/docs/publicsafety/CERT-application.doc) and return by email to certteam@hobokennj.org. Participation in CERT requires the successful completion of a training course on a range of subject matter specific to emergency response and disaster relief.

All classes will be conducted at the Elks Club, 1005 Washington Street starting at 7:00 pm and ending at 9:30 pm. The training schedule is as follows:

  1. Disaster Preparedness  – 1/8/2013
  2. Fire Safety – 1/15/2013
  3. Disaster medical operations (pt 1) – 1/22/2013
  4. Disaster medical operations (pt 2) – 1/29/2013
  5. 5. Light search and rescue operations  – 2/5/2013
  6. 6. CERT organization – 2/12/2013
  7. 7. Disaster psychology – 2/19/2013
  8. 8. Terrorism and CERT  – 2/26/2013

A final drill and exercise will take place at a date to be determined.

Participants must attend every module of training as well as participate in the final emergency simulation exercise in order to receive certification as a fully trained CERT Team member.

Upon completion of the training, each participant will be issued a CERT Member Emergency Kit to maintain for future deployments.
