HOBOKEN OFFERS FREE RECYCLING BINS TO RESIDENTS

Residents Reminded to Place Recyclables at the Curb; Not Place Recyclables Within Plastic Bags

Hoboken Recycling Containers 2013

The City of Hoboken is providing 1,000 recycling bins for free to residents on a first-come, first-served basis effective immediately.

The recycling containers and lids are available for pickup at the Municipal Garage located on Willow Avenue between Observer Highway and Newark Street Monday through Friday, 9am through 4pm. There is a limit of one bin per household, and residents should bring proof of address. Multi-unit buildings may collect up to one bin for every five units.

Why has the garbage and recycling pickup process changed?

The City reminds residents that all garbage and recyclables should be placed at the curb for pickup. Although this has always been required by City ordinance, the City’s trash hauler would previously remove garbage and recyclables from within gated areas as a courtesy to residents. However, following complaints from several residents about vendors entering within or wrongly removing items from private property, the hauler will no longer remove any garbage or recycling from within gated areas. Only garbage and recycling placed at the curb will be picked up.

Single Stream Recycling

In 2011, the City transitioned to single stream recycling which allows residents to place all recyclables (plastic, glass, aluminum, paper) within the same container.

As a reminder, residents should no longer place their recyclables within plastic bags. It is important that all recyclables be placed directly within a recycle bin and not inside bags so that the materials can be automatically sorted at the recycling facility. Residents who wish to continue to use plastic bags within their homes to line recycling containers should later empty the contents directly into a recycling bin to be placed along the curb. Plastic bags can be reused or recycled at most supermarkets or can be disposed of with the garbage.
