Comedy of Errors By William Shakespeare Monday July 16 and 23 at Sinatra Park in Hoboken

There are two shows of this Shakespeare masterpiece in Hoboken with one tonight…

Comedy of Errors
By William Shakespare

Directed by Michael Hagins
Location: Frank Sinatra Park
Dates: Monday July 16 and 23 at 7pm

For the second summer production of the 2012 summer touring season, Hudson Shakespeare returns to Shakespeare’s most screwball comedy – The Comedy of Errors. Set in a 1940′s homage to Looney Tunes cartoons. There are two Hoboken performances both at Frank Sinatra Park in Hoboken. The shows are:

  • Monday, July 16 @ 7pm- Frank Sinatra Park in Hoboken, NJ
  • Monday, July 23 @ 7pm – Frank Sinatra Park, Hoboken, NJ

Top: Antipholus of Ephesus (Michael Rehse) and Antipholus of Syracuse (Rich Wisneski)
Bottom: Dromio of Syracuse (Melissa Meli) and Dromio of Ephesus (Laura Mae Baker)

Photo Courtesy of Hudson Shakespeare Company

Show Synopsis:

Ephesus and Syracuse are at odds. Any Syracusan found in Ephesus will be executed unless he can pay a ransom of a thousand marks. Egeon, an old Syracusan merchant, has been arrested. He explains how he has come to Ephesus: he and his wife Emilia had identical twin sons and identical twin slaves, purchased for the purpose of serving the sons. In a shipwreck many years ago, he was separated from his wife, one son and one slave.

The survivors are renamed in memory of the lost ones: Antipholus for the son and Dromio for the slave. Once grown to manhood, Antipholus of Syracuse, with his Dromio, had set off in search of his brother and mother. Egeon is now in search of them. The Duke gives him until evening to find the ransom money. By chance Antipholus and Dromio of Syracuse have also just arrived in Ephesus. The other Antipholus and Dromio have been living there since the wreck. And so the comedy of errors ensues.

The locals constantly mistake the visiting twins for the natives – even Antipholus of Ephesus’ wife Adriana and her sister Luciana are fooled. The confusions result in Antipholus of Ephesus being arrested for debt and declared mad, while Antipholus of Syracuse take refuge from his brother’s angry wife in a Priory – where the abbess turns out to be Egeon’s long-lost wife. All is resolved and Egeon is freed.

From Wikipedia Commons

Woody Guthrie (July 14, 1912 – October 3, 1967) was an American singer-songwriter whose musical legacy includes hundreds of political, traditional and children’s songs including “So Long It’s Been Good To Know You,” “This Train Is Bound For Glory” and “Oklahoma Hills.” His best-known song, “This Land Is Your Land,” has become one of America’s most beloved patriotic songs and is considered by some as the unofficial second national anthem. Songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, Pete Seeger, Joe Strummer, Billy Bragg and Tom Paxton have all acknowledged Woody Guthrie as a major influence.

Guthrie fathered eight children, including American folk musician Arlo Guthrie and grandfather of musician Sarah Lee Guthrie. Guthrie died from complications of Huntington’s disease, a progressive genetic neurological disorder. During his later years, in spite of his illness, Guthrie served as a figurehead in the folk movement, providing inspiration to a generation of new folk musicians, including mentor relationships with Ramblin’ Jack Elliott and Bob Dylan.

Although Guthrie’s catalog never brought him many awards while he was alive, in 1988 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the same year Bob Dylan was inducted (much of Dylan’s initial folk music work was heavily influenced by Guthrie), and in 2000 he was honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Hoboken Businesses: What Vendor is next at Hoboken’s Sinatra Park?

_DSC0754

The owners of the the Crepe Grill at Sinatra Park had a good product and invested their life savings into this business. Then a perfect storm started: the owners claim there were problems with the facility but what really hurt business was when the soccer field was closed down due to structural deficiencies with the underlying pier. Who wants to play on a soccer field that could collapse? Needless to say their business suffered for it and they have closed down for this year.

The crepes were great but TheBoken always envisioned it more as a hot dog and hamburger type of food place given the traffic. This venue probably won’t get many serious looks until the soccer field and surrounding Pier are fully fixed up.

What do you The Boken reader think should go here as a venue? McDonalds, Burger King or another local entrepreneur? Or perhaps you miss those crepes and will want the Crepe Grill to make its triumphant return.  I guess you would give a crepe after all. Pun intended. Share your thoughts below…..

Greg Myers Business Analyst and last year’s Hoboken Runner Up
As a musician, I’ve always loved standards. And when you’re raised in the Garden State, Mr. Sinatra and his music are as “Jersey” as Taylor ham and egg on a roll. I started singing Sinatra at karaoke bars and eventually got involved in stage performances of “My Way” in Sayreville and Linden.

Barry WayneI work as a broker in finance in Midtown, NY. As a little kid, my grandmother used to amuse me by putting me in her “radio room” which was filled with records of Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bobby Darin, etc. and let me listen for hours to all of the tunes of the 40′s, 50′s & 60′s. I fell in love with this music and grew up listening to and having a special admiration for Frank Sinatra. As a young adult I continued to admire his music and played it at many weddings and various functions I worked as a disc jockey. I sang and listened to his songs over and over to appreciate every nuance and word. Today, I continue to adore his music and share it with all of my family and friends. We now live on Monroe street, only a couple of blocks up from where Frank Sinatra was born and raised, and each time we pass the lot where his home once stood, we appreciate all of the music that he has gifted us with. Rick Valiant has been paying tribute to Frank Sinatra for the past three years. Corporate conventions, seniors homes, charity functions and last year’s Hoboken Sinatra Idol Competition, as well as casinos in Vancouver. He was just involved recently in Las Vegas at the Tribute Artist and Impersonator Convention in February where he performed in the Golden Nugget Casino and on the freemont Street Stage in old Las Vegas, and most recently in Vancouver in theatres with his own 9pc orchestra bringing back the big band sound, keeping Frank Sintra’s sounds alive in Vancouver Canada and beyond his local residence.

I have been singing Sinatra since High School in the 50’s. Had leads in plays at the shore area in the 60’s (Guys & Dolls, etc.). Started singing Sinatra songs in clubs with the Jerry Lambert Band in the 70’s, and have continued singing in clubs in New Jersey & New York. I am presently doing Sinatra concerts at retirement villages, golf course events, hospitals and assisted living homes.

Began singing Sinatra in high school after I was introduced to him by my grandmother.

Joe CofoneI got hooked on Sinatra’s music when I was 16 and heard one of his recordings at the home of a friend. Something in the rendering of the lyric, his phrasing, the resonance, tone, and quality of his voice, and the impeccably crafted arrangements forged somewhere deep inside of me an indelible impression and appreciation for Sinatra’s music. It’s now been over 40 years since I first started listening to and singing Sinatra songs, and I hope to continue to do so for at least another 40. While there is no video of me performing, audio samples are available at www.myspace.com/joecofone.

James Dempsey Operations Manager of Digital Graphic/Sign facility in Virginia.
Growing up in Las Vegas offered wonderful memories during the ’70s from watching members from the “Rat Pack”, Elvis and many others perform. Listening to my parents play Frank Sinatra’s music as well as others provided wonderful and loving memories and a base to sing those songs.

I started singing in high school choir and then later became a harmonist/percussionist during the ’80s. I left the music industry and raised a family during the ’90s until 2006. I relocated to Washington, DC and started singing, then recorded a CD of remastered Frank Sinatra songs in different styles. Frank Sinatra’s way of singing brings joy to me and I do my best to carry on his legacy.

Chris Jason is a Sinatra Tribute Entertainer from Rhode Island, singing Sinatra tunes for the last 15 years. He is 35 years old and says that music is all he has ever known. He grew up listening to Frank, Tony Bennett and Englebert and has been entertaining crowds since age 6. “Sinatra is something that has flowed naturally from me,” he says. “It is my natural voice and ability and a lot of the time, when performing at shows, the audience sometimes questions whether I am lip syncing. I would love the opportunity to show my respect for Mr. Sinatra in this way. It is truly an honor to be chosen to be part of this great day in Hoboken, NJ.”
