21 & Over – No Cover

Hoboken Music Awards 2012
Organizers purposely delayed the handing out of awards this year in order to raise money to help musicians in need following Hurricane Sandy. Their originally scheduled night of ceremony and fun at Maxwell’s was turned onto a fundraiser which we called The Hobey Fund. They raised over $1600 and  are very proud of the Hoboken community!

It is thus now time to celebrate the great music makers of Hoboken. So come out on Saturday December 15 at 8pm to Northern Soul (557 1st Street) as they announce the winners and present the proceeds from their fundraiser.

Filed under: fundraiser,Hoboken,Live Music,northern soul — Tags: , , , — TheBoken @ 10:00 AM

Here is another music event in Hoboken and for a good cause at the intimate Northern Soul….

3rd Annual Creative Mission Against Cervical Cancer

The Creative Mission Against Cervical Cancer will hold its 3rd annual charity event on Saturday, January 28th 2012 from 8pm-11pm at Northern Soul in Hoboken, NJ. This event will bring together local musicians to raise money and awareness in the fight against cervical cancer.  All money raised goes directly to the National Cervical Cancer Coalition.

It has been a great success the past few years and promises to be even bigger this year. The group is excited to announce a full returning line up! To open the evening will be Hoboken’s own Celtic jammers "Gold n Brown", along with the biggest thing in NJ since Taylor Ham, "Bern and The Brights." And fresh off their recent tour where they played the legendary Tarrytown Music Hall, Rockland County’s favorite sons "Little Rusty".

Cervical Cancer Concert at Northern Soul 1-28-2011

Northern Soul, a well-known local music spot, along with Dave Entwistle the weekly host of The Peoples Open Mic, generously offered the space again for this year’s event.

Good times, good music, drink specials and a great cause – The National Cervical Cancer Coalition. Please spread word!

Drunken Polar Bear’sThe Hoboken Weekend Ahead (Jan 6-8)

Happy Friday Hobokenites!  The holidays are over, some Christmas decorations are still up, but it’s back to the daily grind for most of us.  We at TheBoken.com will continue to do the research and find the cool things around town, but if you have any suggestions please post them in the comments below with hyperlinks if you can.

Weather Outlook

Brrrrr – it was a arctic start to the week and we have warmed up beyond January averages.  That warming trend will continue today (high 48) and tomorrow (high 51!) before Sunday starts a trend of low-mid 40’s and sun for the foreseeable future.  It may be good news to some, but I am a little disappointed we haven’t seen any snow!

Local Sports Action

The Giants stormed into the playoffs with a clutch win over the Cowboys last Sunday night.  They square off against the surging Atlanta Falcons in the Wild Card round Sunday at 1pm (FOX).  For those heading to local bars, get there early if you want a seat.  Other game include CIN vs. HOU (Sat 430 on NBC), DET vs. NO (Sat 8pm on NBC) & PIT vs. DEN (Sun 4pm on CBS). Theboken.com will be hosting a live blog as well. Go to http://theboken.com/nyg-vs-atl-live-blog-1-8-2012/ to join in the commentary at 12:45pm this Sunday.

NY Giants vs. Atlanta Falcons

Hockey updates – Coming off a HUGE win against those dirty Flyers in the Winter Classic and a win last night against the Panthers, our first place Rangers travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Penguins tonight at 7.  Devils host the Panthers tonight (8pm) and then travel to Pittsburgh for a Saturday night match-up against the Penguins (7pm).   The Islanders are at Anaheim tonight (10pm) and Phoenix tomorrow (8pm)

What’s Going on Around Town?

-          Scotch, Scotch, Scotch – No, it’s not Ron Burgundy time, but Northern Soul (557 First St) is having a Scotch Tasting at 4pm on Saturday.  For a good price ($30) you get to sample 4 scotches, a specialty of your choice and learn about various scotch regions and how this wonderful spirit is made.

-          Free Rabies Vaccines for Your Dog/Cat – although Hoboken is an urban area your pets still have a chance of contracting rabies from rabid animals.  Prevent that with a quick and FREE rabies shot. You don’t want your pooch to turn into this….

-          I’m Working on My Fitness – Looking for an excuse to join a gym or just switch gym memberships?  Almost all gyms have New Years deals worth checking out and Saturday is a great time to check out a potential new gym.

-          Music to My Ears – quite a few bars will have live music tonight and this weekend

DPB’s Weekend Recommendations – 2 this week!

-          Enjoy what may be our last gasp at non-freezing temperatures for a few weeks and get outside on Saturday.  With a sunny high of 51, it’s a great time to take a long walk, run or get together with a group of friends for a pickup football game.  Take a long stroll down the waterfront to check out the piers.  My personal favorite is to get up early (while the partiers are still sleeping off the booze) and grab a cup of coffee sandwich and sit outside one of the coffee shops and people watch.

-          WAR HORSE – during the break I took my Dad to see this movie because it was his type of beautiful shot John Ford war epic.  I can easily say it was one of the best movies I have seen in a long time.  Great story, great acting, great photography.  It’s playing at the Hoboken movie theater all weekend and worth checking out.

For Hoboken’s Clearview Cinemas schedule this weekend to see War Horse or any other movie playing there go to: http://www.movietickets.com/house_detail.asp?exid=CLE&house_id=20391

What are you all doing this weekend?  Any suggestions?

Drunken Polar Bear’s Hoboken Weekend Outlook for 12/9-12/11/2011

Here is a another weekend roundup from columnist The Drunken Polar Bear…

Happy Friday Hobokenites!  Now and then we like to give you a quick snapshot of what’s going on this weekend so you make the most of your break from the daily grind…

Hoboken Weather Outlook

Unlike those other Hoboken blogs,  at TheBoken.com you get the advantage of having a semi-pro meteorologist on your side who will give you a detailed and accurate weather forecast!  We had a good few days of above average temperatures earlier this week before some heavy rains and colder weather moved in.  Get ready for a dry and sunny weekend, albeit a very cold one.  Another larger and stronger cold front will be moving into the area late Friday bringing even chillier temperatures in the area.  Highs on Saturday & Sunday will be 42 and 40 degrees with lows dropping below freezing at night.  Bundle up!

Local Sports Action

It’s going to be a big weekend for local football fans as both the Jets and Giants are fighting to make the playoffs.

  • The Jets face the QB-depleted Kansas City Chiefs at home on Sunday at 1pm (CBS).  Jets are favored to win but must first slow down the Chiefs prolific rushing attack.  This Polar Bear will be there live rooting them on.
  • The Giants square off against the surging Cowboys Sunday night at 8pm (NBC) who sit a game above the Giants in the standings despite a last minute loss to the Cardinals last week.  This could be a make or break game for the whole Giants season.

Hockey updates – Devils host the visiting Canadians Saturday at 1, the Islanders host the Penguins Saturday night at 7 and the Rangers have games both Saturday and Sunday nights against Buffalo and Florida.

What’s Going on Around Town?

Beware the Santas!:  Saturday marks the annual “SantaCon”, an all-day bar crawl/drinking extravaganza where hundreds (if not a few thousand) locals dress up in their best holiday costumes and work their way through the bars of Manhattan.  Although this doesn’t take place in Hoboken don’t be alarmed if you see a march of the Santas to the Path early in the day or drunken Santas spreading their holiday cheer later Saturday night.

 A Theatrical Weekend:

  • Mile Square Theatre continues their run of the holiday classic – It’s a Wonderful Life
  • Hoboken High School stages “Voices from High School” – a realistic, contemporary teen play that consists of small scenes, vignettes, and monologues that depict the joys and difficulties of being a teenager in high school.
  • Hoboken Women’s Choir lifts their voices in holiday fashion with a “Songs for a Winter Night” on Saturday evening.

Scotch, Scotch, Scotch for another weekend (sorry postponed until January 2012)

  • Northern Soul was planning to host a Scotch Tasting on Saturday night but due to a scheduling conflict had to reschedule to early January of 2012.

DPB’s Weekend Recommendation

Each weekend I will try and give you something new and fresh to do.  This weekend’s suggestion – catch a sunrise from one of the many waterfront vantage points or parks Hoboken has to offer.  During the week we are all running around trying to get to work so we don’t get to take advantage of some of the natural treasures our city has to offer.  Saturday and Sunday promise to have clear skies and good sunrises.  It’s a little earlier, but grab a cup of coffee, a warm bagel and find a spot.  Sunrise times (tested this morning on a run!) are about 630-715 and its gorgeous.

What are you all doing this weekend?  Any suggestions?

mic_logo_270

On November 20, 2010 come to Northern Soul in Hoboken, NJ. There is going to be a little party called The Hoboken Music Awards. On that night, they will honor the local music scene and the people who make it happen.

Throughout this past year, Northern Soul has really established itself as a lot more than just another neighborhood bar in Hoboken. It has embraced original live music in a way that has not been seen in a while. They helped to fill the void left by many lost venues.

Each week, the Peoples Open Mic and Live Music Thursdays have helped to bring artists (including many of our nominees) to the ears and hearts of Hoboken. We are so happy to be having our annual celebration of music at this fine venue.

Having Fun at Northern Soul

Filed under: Neighborhood Bar,northern soul — TheBoken @ 9:01 AM

Having Fun at Northern Soul

Northern Soul Bar located at 577 First Street in Hoboken between Madison and Monroe Street is a hidden gem in the mile square city.

This local’s pub has become a frequent stop for us and you should give it a try too.  No lines outside, plenty of room to grab a drink and relax.  Northern Soul has a great selection of draft beers and a limited food menu but offers menus for delivery from all Hoboken establishments.

Northern Soul also has a plenty of bar games to keep you busy if you enjoy that competitive nature as you drink.  I am for sure that person that likes to compete for drinks!

They offer a full size pool table, a couple dart boards with darts that are legit, Buck Hunter and Photo Hunt.  If they only had Golden Tee!  Along with these fun games Northern Soul is also one of the few dog friendly pubs in Hoboken.  Of course they ask that you keep the pup on a leash and only bring them in during off peak hours.

Stop in Northern Soul when you are on the south side of town and enjoy yourself.
