Rosticeria Da gigi brings “Real Simple Honest Food” to the Mile Square – For Real!

Rosticera Da gigi located at 916 Washington Street in Hoboken recently opened their doors to give Mile Square residents on the go the option of real simple honest food at reasonable prices. They are open from 7am-10pm Monday through Friday and 8am-10pm Saturday and Sunday which gives Hobokenites the option for breakfast lunch and dinner. TheBoken.com sampled both the breakfast option as well as a lunch option today and came away impressed given the fact that they recently just opened.

For breakfast, not being a huge fan of eggs (personal choice)  I opted for 7 grain toast, sausage, and home fries to coat my drunken stomach. The home fries were very good and the sausage was a lot like kielbasa but a bit different. Abe Froman the “Sausage King of Chicago”  would likely approve in the world of Ferris Bueller but in real life the sausage was very good as well. For an ala-carte breakfast it certainly hit the spot. The coffee was also delicious and had a strong bold flavor without being bitter.

For lunch and dinner this eatery has a choice of cold cut sandwiches, paninis and even dipped sandwiches. However where TheBoken.com think this casual eatery will makes its mark is in the roasted meats prepared on the premises. Hankering for a slice of beef brisket several hours later I came back and had the beef brisket with two sides including broccoli rabe. The brisket is simply to die for. Slow cooking is the key to this tasty dish and the flavor and the tenderness of the meat which could easily be cut with a butter knife make this a worthwhile regular place. Several long time residents that I know have already visited this place over a dozen times and find the pot roast, roast chicken and other slow cooked roasts a reason to keep coming back. Newer residents of Hoboken will also likely be attracted to this place as well as you can get a balanced lunch or dinner for only $9.95 with a nice portion of meat and two sides. I am sure most people who can follow simple directions could pull off a halfway decent brisket but who has the time to do it right? This is where Rosticera Da gigi will likely establish a niche.

I spoke to Mark Bogdanos, one of the owners before this place opened up and he passionately described his culinary vision for this establishment with an enthusiasm that I have not seen in quite some time. It is great when passion actually connects with execution and one can only hope through word of mouth this place is in business for some time. Below are more photos of the eatery and food options.….

Hoboken Uptown Farmer's MarketThe Hoboken Uptown Farmers’ Market, in conjunction with The Quality of Life Coalition, will be arriving soon, with proof in the form of strawberries, sweet corn, and those famous Jersey tomatoes.  Beginning June 6, and running through October, the market will be open Thursdays from 2 pm to 7 pm.  (The market will be closed on July 4 for the holiday.). The new, earlier opening time is in response to customer demand.  You wanted your veggies sooner, and the market is happy to deliver!  The convenient time and location at the corner of 13th and Hudson Streets ensures that residents of uptown Hoboken and beyond will have an opportunity to load up on some freshly picked salad greens for Thursday night’s dinner or a scrumptious blueberry pie for the weekend barbecue.

The Hoboken Uptown Farmers’ Market is excited to announce a few new vendors in the mix this season.  Alan’s Flower Farm, of Chesterfield, NJ will be joining the market each week with fresh cut flowers and produce from his farm.  Additionally, market-goers can look forward to live demonstrations and veggie education from Hoboken’s own Skinny Chef, Jennifer Iserloh, on the third Thursday of each month.  On the final Thursday of each month, Hobokenites can bring their dull kitchen knifes to the market, where Neil’s Sharpening Service will revive the blades to full tomato slicing capacity.

These new faces join returning vendors Stony Hill Farms of Chester, Gina’s Bakery of  Montclair, Hoboken Farms, and customer favorite, Dr. Pickle, who will happily give customers a sample of any of his briny, delicious olives, roasted peppers and pickles, of course!  As a certified ‘Jersey Fresh’ market, the customer can be assured that the fresh produce is grown right here in New Jersey.

As in years past, the market is committed to helping our neighbors in Hoboken who have limited access to fresh fruits and vegetables.  At the end of each day, vendors are encouraged to donate leftover produce to the Hoboken Shelter, which is celebrating its thirtieth year of service to our community.  Additionally, eligible customers are welcome to use WIC (Women, Infants & Children Program) coupons with participating vendors.

Pier 13 Now Open for Business in Hoboken – Stunning Views of NYC!

The Hoboken Planning Board earlier this week approved Pier 13′s plans to re-open this year and they are now open this weekend. They are serving craft beers and mixed drinks and have 4 food trucks as of Sunday. The lawn has been recently re-sodded and that are is closed off for another 1 1/2 to 2 weeks until the grass as had time to take root.

The beer truck is not there this year but instead a bar has been set up at the back of the main building in the pier. Other than loud music at the kickoff last year for 4th of July this outdoor bar space has received strong community support. Well over 2,000 residents signed the petition in support of this establishment. All that was required this year is that the proper approvals came from Hoboken Planning Board. Some restrictions did apply like no beer truck but instead a bar out of the back of the building  but this space is able to run as a private bar on what is supposed to be public space and it is as it is open to the public whether you plan to drink or not.

The food trucks for Sunday included Luke’s Lobster, Pudgy’s Street Food, Hunger Construction and Munch Man Truck.  Pier 13 is located at 1301 Sinatra Drive.

Hurricane Sandy left many Hoboken families in need of food. We can help brighten Thanksgiving for these families through a program of the Hoboken Food Pantry. When you shop for your own family, shop for one other family. Fill a shopping bag with these items:

  • Canned yams
  • Canned vegetables
  • Cranberry sauce
  • Cookies, pies or other desserts

Tasteful Tailgating Tips from Chef Anthony Pino
