Hoboken Girl’s Guide to Healthy Hoboken Eating

With spring fast approaching, it’s time to come out of Hoboken hibernation and get fit and ready for the warmer weather. There are a large variety of eateries and bars, and it can sometimes be tough to stay healthy while galivanting in Hoboken. So in an effort to help you stay healthy and prep for bathing suit season, I’ve compiled an abbreviated list of places and food menu options for when you’re out and about but still trying to go light…

1. Trinity Bar and Grill:

Portabello Mushroom Wrap – I recently ordered this, it was delicious! The chickpeas (versus a side of fries) are a healthy and lean boost of protein as well.

Blackened Salmon and Avocado Wrap – a yummy and healthy option for a wrap.

*FYI: Avocado contains great nutrients such as vitamin K, potassium, dietary fiber, vitamin C, and is a wonderful source of antioxidants, lending itself well to the promotion of a healthier cardiovascular system and a skinny waistline. When in doubt- go with avocado! Not to mention it’s delicious.

2. Wicked Wolf:

Grilled Veggie Wrap on Whole Wheat – similar to the popular turkey wrap, but the veggie option. I just can’t get enough sauteed veggies! Yum.

Harvest Pear Salad: Mixed greens topped with grilled chicken breast, blue cheese, dried cranberries and pecans served with balsamic vinaigrette - take my word for it, it’s delicious.

    • FYI: Wicked Wolf’s salads are available with grilled chicken breast, grilled thick sliced steak, grilled shrimp or sauteed shrimp for an additional charge…I’d recommend grilled shrimp or chicken if you’re trying to stay lean.

3. Clinton Social:

Vegetarian Stuffed Pepper: This bad boy contains some delicious flavors (plaintains, red peppers, red pepper coulis, basmati rice), and after taking your first bite, you won’t be able to put it down.

Yellowfin Tuna: Pepper-dusted, wasabi-whipped potatoes, julienned vegetables with a soy-ginger glaze.

*FYI: Tuna is a truly a nutrient-dense food. It’s an excellent source of protein, and it’s rich in minerals like selenium, magnesium, and potassium; vitamin B, and omega-3.

4. Mikie Squared:

Cindy is ALWAYS on a Diet SaladThis delicious salad is a little embarrassing to ask for by name, but it’s worth it. Grilled chicken with grilled vegetables & avocado with a side of honey balsamic vinaigrette…low carb and delicious. It really doesn’t get better. The sauteed veggies are delicious and go perfectly with the honey basalmic.

Grilled Salmon – Says the menu, “Drizzled in a delectable dill creme sauce with rice & grilled vegetables.” Can’t go wrong with fish and veggies (and a glass of pinot).

5. Marty O’Brien’s Social Club had three options you might want to try:

Grilled Eggplant with fresh mozzarella, grilled roasted red peppers, tomato, balsamic glaze.

Seared Tuna Salad – Mixed greens with mandarian oranges, red peppers, snow peas, goat cheese, balsamic dressing. Did I mention I love basalmic dressing?

Vegetable Stir Fry- Fresh seasonal vegetables, teriyaki sauce, and rice – add chicken or shrimp for some extra protein (but hold the steak if you want to keep it light)!
Regardless of where you choose to wine and dine in Hoboken, make your options healthy when possible. A few simple rules to follow to stay lean: order your food grilled not fried, hold the cheese when you can, and fill up on veggies before diving into the salty appetizers and other indulgences.
Happy (almost) spring!

Christin’s Morning Spoon: The Clinton Social in Hoboken

After a great holiday season, I started 2012 off right with a New Year’s Day brunch at The Clinton Social.  It is located at 700 Clinton Street, on the corner of Clinton and 7th Streets, right across the street from A&P.  They are open for brunch on Saturdays and Sundays starting at noon.

I have been to The Clinton Social a few times for dinner, but never tried their brunch.  For New Year’s Day, they had a brunch special:  an entrée and two brunch cocktails, bloody Mary, mimosa, draft beer or house wine, for $20.  Unfortunately, my brunch buddy and I were never told about the deal and only saw it advertised as we paid the check.

Here’s my recap.

Two rooms, two different feels.  As you walk into The Clinton Social, the first room is the bar.  There is a large bar with TVs perfect for watching the game, and there are high tables up against the windows.  The bar area was partially filled with quite the noisy crowd.  Since we had a late New Year’s Eve and were looking for a quieter meal, we decided to sit in the back room.

The back room has a completely different feel from the bar section.  The exposed brick and brightly painted walls bring light into the area, creating a warm and inviting space.  This gives it more an upscale feel in contrast with the front bar. The back area has about fifteen tables.  The hostess offered to seat us at a table next to two families with little children or at a table in the middle of the walkway.  When we asked if we could sit in the back corner by the windows, we were told that all of the tables had reservations, so there were only a limited number of tables to chose from.  We chose the table in the walkway, and by the end of our meal, only one table was seated!

Small Breakfast Menu.  The Clinton Social’s brunch menu only has a limited selection of brunch items.  Although there are only eight items, the menu is very diverse.  They have steak & eggs, a smoked salmon platter, French toast and short rib hash.  The most interesting item on the menu was the Eggs David.  It is The Clinton Social’s unique spin on Eggs Benedict.  English muffins are topped with meatloaf, poached eggs and Hollandaise sauce.  It is definitely not something I would try, but my brunch buddy said that was his second choice.

The Clinton Social does have a larger menu with lunch items.  There are numerous appetizers, my favorite of which is the artichoke and goat cheese pierogies.  My girlfriends and I shared them the last time we were there and absolutely loved them.  There are a few choices of sliders, salads, pizzas, sandwiches and even pasta.  If you are looking for a more of a lunch spot, this is your place.  They also have a number of lunch cocktails if a liquid lunch is more your speed!

Huevos Rancheros.  Instead of the Eggs David, my brunch buddy ordered the Huevos Rancheros.  Black beans, jalapenos, avocado and sour cream are served with eggs made your way and placed atop a corn tortilla.  He chose two sunny side up eggs.  He liked that Clinton Social did something a little different with the meal, but felt like they sacrificed practicality for presentation when they fanned out the three tortillas around the eggs in the middle. Overall, he said they were among his favorite huevos in town, after he got through the ordeal of rearranging his plate.

I have actually never tried Huevos Ranceros.  I always thought eggs combined with the fixings for an amazing burrito are a bit too odd for a morning meal.  Boy was I wrong!  I skeptically tried his brunch and I was instantly overcome with food envy.  It was amazing.  I loved the mix of flavors that were in every bite, absolutely amazing.

The Social Breakfast.  I was truthfully stumped over what to order for brunch.  I did not really feel like pancakes and I had French toast the day before.  So after I bit of deliberating, I decided on The Social Breakfast.  Although I thought it was a bit too much food, I went for it anyway.   It consists of two eggs any style, bacon or sausage, home fries, toast and two pancakes. I chose scrambled eggs with a bit of cheddar cheese and asked if I could have it without the pancakes. My brunch buddy scoffed at me giving up food, and gladly offered to eat a few bites of them for me.

When my meal arrived, it turned out not to be as big as I was expecting.  There were only two slices of bacon and the pancakes were actually very tiny.  Even though I initially wanted to eliminate the pancakes, they were actually my favorite part – just the right amount of vanilla; sweet and powerful, without being overbearing.

A Bit Expensive.   Almost all of the items on the brunch menu are around $12-$14.  The most expensive, the short rib hash is $18.  My brunch buddy’s Huevos Rancheros were $12 and my social breakfast was $14 ($15 after they tacked on a dollar for cheese).  Although it may not seem like that much, for the portion size, I thought that it was a little pricey.  They also did not give a bread basket which is a huge letdown to me!

I was recently told that I was a bit too generous with my spoons last year, so for 2012, I will be a bit tougher.  Out of five spoons, I give The Clinton Social three.  As a whole it was a good brunch, but lacked the variety of breakfast choices that I was really hoping for.  Although my brunch buddy and I both enjoyed our meals, for the price, we felt that the food could have been a bit tastier.

Next week, I will be brunching at Marty O’Briens Social Club.  It is a newly redone bar/restaurant on the corner of 1st and Bloomfield, where Buskers used to be.

Hoboken Dad Visits Clinton Social

Filed under: Clinton Social,Happy Hour,Hoboken Dad,Hoboken Moms,kid friendly — TheBoken @ 7:30 AM

With the recent addition of Baby Boken to The Boken Online family we have decided to have a new weekly article for all those Hoboken Dad’s out there in the mile square city.

This new addition to the website will bring insight to all the fathers in Hoboken and give them the perfect place to enjoy a day or evening out with their baby or child.  One of the reasons we all live in Hoboken is the great restaurants and bars around the city and having a baby should not stop you from enjoying a couple of pints, a Sunday Football day at the local pub or an evening out with your wife and baby for dinner.

Each week we will highlight a baby friendly establishment around the town and we look forward to hearing your feedback.

“Hoboken Dads”

When you walk around Hoboken in the afternoons one thing you will see are strollers being pushed on the side walks and kids playing in playgrounds. But where do all those baby’s and children go after 5pm? Some parents may have their favorite pizza spot they enjoy once a week as a night out in Hoboken but why stop there?

CLinton 015

The Boken is here to help guide you to their favorite baby and child friendly establishments around town. The first place we chose to share with our readers is “Clinton Social”. This restaurant and bar opened in 2009 on the corner of Seventh and Clinton. It offers parents one of the best bar areas in Hoboken to enjoy with their baby. A large front room offers plenty of space for our large strollers we use today and the staff is always looking to accommodate room for parents to sit with their young ones.

Clinton Social opens their doors at 4pm during the week and offer a stellar happy hour which includes $3.00 for all drafts beers from Miller Lite to some well knows Craft Beers.

The crowd for happy hour and dinner is always great and with soft music playing in the background it is the perfect place for your baby to take a nap as you enjoy dinner and drinks.

CLinton 010

Clinton Social also offers a back room that is great for private parties and large dinner groups.

Stop in Clinton Social and you will not be disappointed!

“Local Gossip, Local Grub” @ Clinton Social in Hoboken

Clinton Social

“Local Gossip, Local Grub”

CLinton 010

By ASHLEIGH SCHUDDEKOPF

Hoboken prides itself on its old-school classic Italian culture. This includes hospitality, traditions, and of course—food.

That’s what Clinton Social, located 700 Clinton Street does for contemporary Hoboken. With its dim lights and rustic atmosphere, it allows families and loved ones to dine in a modern restaurant with an authentic Hoboken vibe.

CLinton 013

“All of the décor is from old-school Hoboken, and our theme and the whole feel of the place is ‘local gossip, local grub’,” Eric Godfrey, General Manager and wine expert says.

Clinton Social, owned by David Carney opened last June. However, this past week there were some serious changes made to the fantastic menu.

For starters they are now offering a Hummus Platter with olives, eggplant tapenade and warm pita bread, and French Onion Dumplings with asiago and provolone cheese, which is a spin-off of the popular soup. Also, they are now featuring an array of salads and sliders for every taste.

A few signature entrées include Short Ribs with a port wine glaze, Chilean Seabass with black beans and fruit salsa, and Seafood Bouillabaisse with shrimp, clams, mussels, chorizo, and rice in a homemade broth.

CLinton 007

Besides fabulous food, the Clinton Social serves up some awesome customer service.

“We pride ourselves on our staff, big time—I am blessed. In my opinion, we probably have the best staff in Hoboken. They’re great guys and gals who care about the place,” Godfrey says.

CLinton 005

Here are some of their drink specials:

Sunday- $3 drafts

Monday-Half price on Infusions

Tuesday-Wine Night

Wednesday-Half price on Sweet Tea Cocktails

Thursday-Martini Night

Monday-Friday: Happy Hour from 4-7pm includes $3.00 drafts, discounted well drinks and sangria.

Not only is the Clinton Social a fantastic place to dine, but Friday and Saturday nights are a new hot-spot. The bar is open until 3 a.m. and a DJ plays all night long, offering a good time for all ages, above 21, of course.

CLinton 018

So if you are looking for a delicious meal to share with friends and family with that classic Hoboken feeling, the Clinton Social is the best place in Hoboken to get it. Grab a glass of wine and Bon Appétit!
