Valentine’s Day on Washington Street in Hoboken

Valentine’s Day is around the corner, and some of you might be contemplating what to get that special Hoboken someone. Trekking down Washington Street recently, I found a variety of Hoboken reds, jewels, sweets, and designer duds to please even the pickiest of valentines.

Here are some ideas to get you started, depending on which type of Valentine you are dealing with:

1.    The Sentimental/Traditional Valentine:

Some traditional yet trendy heart Shaped Earrings from Townhouse 620 might do the trick.

Townhouse 620 Earrings

Compliment those with some chocolates from the Garden of Eden, but make sure they’re in a cute box like these:

Carlo’s Bakery also boasts some lavish cakes, Italian desserts, and of course, chocolate dipped strawberries.

2. The Friends with Benefits Valentine:

Want to go the flower route but feel like it might be a little soon? Try these nontraditional flowers…they’re actually red underwear, rolled up in a ball in the shape of flowers. Found at YES I DO!

3. The “It’s Kind of Serious” Valentine:

Some hot dinner spots to treat this type of Valentine to include Anthony Davids for delicious food or Augustinos on 11th & Washington, a little Italian gem of a place – or perhaps some wine tasting and apps at Bin 14 or Amanda’s.

For added bonus gifts, please refer to #1.

4.  The Live-In Valentine

Perhaps you are sharing living space with your valentine…what better than an adorable apron from Ricky’s on Washington so your valentine can look super chic while cooking? Or you could wear it yourself as a surprise and cook a fabulous dinner for two.

For all of the snail mail goes in and out of your shared abode: a Monogram maker from YES I DO.

5. The Pet-Loving Valentine

Find your way to your Valentine’s heart than through a puppy jacket from Hoboken Pets on Washington.

Or treat your valentine’s pooch to a cleaning at the Hoboken Dog Wash on 4th Street!

6. Fashionista Valentine:

As a fellow fashion enthusiast, another option is to treat her to some designer deals at the recently relocated (just upstairs!) Midtown Authentic, where you’ll find purses galore! Check out the store’s new purse wall and rooms chock full of designer finds.

Also for the fashion-conscious: Iconic Fashion Lounge has some adorable Rebecca Minckoff bags in various color pops. My favorite is the bold blue.

8. The Stressed Out Valentine

For the valentine that works hard all day long, a massage treat at Bliss or Massage Envy. Reap the benefits of your gift with a couples’ massage to boot.

Or,  perhaps a mani/pedi gift certificate to one of the many nail salons around Hoboken. My favorites include Bloom and the Nail Bar.

9. The Single Girl/Friend Valentine:

Recent breakup revenge can be found with an Ex Voodoo Doll from YES I DO! on Washington Street.

Or spend a girls night out at the Melting Pot – lots of fondue!

10. The Alternative Valentine

For off-the-beaten-path ideas, sign up for a healthy cooking class with Healthy Hoboken Girl or a cake decorating session at Carlo’s Lackawanna Factory.

Sewing classes for the thread-challenged or crafty alike at M Avery Designs, and another unconventional gift: a certificate to Hoboken Car Wash – a complete detailing will surely make your valentine forget about how difficult parking can be at times with a sparkly wash and shine.

Regardless of the type of Valentine cupid is shooting down for you this season, be sure to treat him/her well. There are endless amounts of treats and experiences that can be found in the Mile Square City…only a few days left, so get to it!

Carlo’s Bakery Announces Classes with Cast Members

From Hoboken’s very own Carlo’s Bakery, cooking classes with cast members from the Cake Boss. Now you can play with fondant and learn the art of cake baking from reality show celebrities in Neighboring Jersey City…

Encompassing more than 35,000 square feet, Carlo’s Bakery’s newly finished Cake Factory boasts state of the art equipment and the opportunity to bring their famous sweets to fans worldwide. Although the factory is not open for walk-‐in retail business, owner Buddy Valastro has dreamt up new ways to bring fans and aspiring culinary enthusiasts together in his “Kitchen.” “The Kitchen,” a state of the art cooking, baking, and decorating classroom located in the heart of the Cake Factory, gives students for a behind the scenes look at the inner workings of Carlo’s Bakery in a class led by the Carlo’s team.

In January 2012, Carlo’s launched new course options for baking and decorating classes through June 2012. Cooking classes will also be added throughout January. Classes vary in difficulty and pricing begins at $125. “We had our first classes at the Cake Factory this fall. Everyone had such a good time at our fondant decorating classes that we wanted to be able to offer people more options,” said Valastro. In a new twist, guests will be able to be taught by the Valastro family themselves; you can bake with Joey, decorate with Mauro, or cook with Cousin Anthony, Frankie and the sisters. “When my family saw how much fun they were having in the classes, they decided to teach a few themselves. Even my sister Grace, who isn’t exactly known for her cooking skills, has been perfecting some easy recipes to share. It’s going to be a great time!” added Valastro.

Carlo’s Bakery in Hoboken Tackles Long Lines By Allowing Online Ordering

Tired of long lines to get your Carlo’s Bakery treats for the holidays? Carlo’s bakery has a way to help you expedite your pickup of baked goods by allowing customers to order online and then skip the line when picking up goods. Below is their press release promising making ordering with them “easy as pie” . Not my puns, theirs.

Since 2009, Carlo’s Bakery has been the center stage for the hit TLC reality series “CakeBoss.” The show has inspired fans to visit the flagship Hoboken store to take a peek at the famous bakery, resulting in patrons waiting 40 minutes or longer to enter the shop.

Owner Buddy Valastro has been working to create new ways to serve loyal customers, both new and old.
“Carlo’s was a Hoboken landmark for almost 100 years before we were on television, and I’ve been working hard to find a way to better meet everyone’s needs.”

Valastro has launched an online program to make it “easy as pie” for all customers to pick up their holiday treats;  everyone can preorder their selections at www.carlosbakery.com/pickup and “skip the line” when arriving at the store. He adds, “we don’t want to isolate anyone that cannot wait in line to browse  our stock for that day. I want to make it easy for everyone to bring home pies and cakes to their families this holiday season. By ordering online, everyone knows what we have to offer.”

Current products include trays of biscotti, rugelach, or butter cookies, and holiday staples such as pecan, apple, pumpkin, coconut custard, blueberry pie, and more. In store pick up dates can be scheduled December 19-‐24, 2011 from 7am-‐8pm. Plans to expand the website preordering are in works.

Hoboken centric Food Blog “Half Buzzed Hostess” has a post up on who has the best cannoli in Hoboken. She chose Cammareri’s Brooklyn Bakery, Carlo’s Bakery and Giorgio Pasticcerie Italian for a taste test amongst her 100% Italian or 50% Italian friends and family.

Cannoli Taste Off

From left to right: Cammareri’s Brooklyn Bakery #1, Carlo’s Bakery #2 and Giorgio Pasticcerie Italian #3 for the taste test. This was not the order of finish.

TheBoken can tell you that Carlo’s Bakery did not win the taste test but will not give away a complete spoiler and give you the link to the final results instead. It just goes to show you that success can have its down side when you try to mass produce bake goods on a larger scale.

Question: Were any other bakeries left out that should have been included? What is your favorite place for cannoli in Hoboken. Share your thoughts below….
