McDonald’s in Hoboken after completing an extensive renovation and modernizing both inside and out did a soft opening this weekend. Located at the corner of 3rd and Washington, this hub of a fast food and good Wi-Fi connection actually does have a few healthy items on the menu but does anyone honestly go to McDonald’s to eat a salad? Their official Grand Opening will run the week or April 22- April 28. May McDonalds super size its profits without super sizing their patrons.

After a year of behind-the-scenes work, Hoboken resident Allison Bartels unveiled her solution for families seeking reliable childcare services. On Monday, April 1st, A Brighter Mile (www.abrightermile.com) went live as Hoboken’s new one-stop-shop connecting local families with educators who offer babysitting, tutoring and coaching services.
Unlike other babysitting sites and agencies, A Brighter Mile childcare providers must be licensed to work within a state school system. Listed childcare providers are local teachers, school psychologists, social workers, speech therapists, and occupational therapists – all professionals who work with children on a daily basis.
To simplify how parents connect with educators, the site allows users to conduct searches based on qualifications such as education level, special education background, and CPR/Epi-Pen certifications, to name a few. All educators have detailed profiles listing areas of expertise and availability to help families find the best and most suitable care for their children.
In addition to its online community, A Brighter Mile will be active within the Hoboken community. On May 5th, A Brighter Mile will have a booth at the Hoboken Arts & Music Festival. On May 15th, President and Founder, Allison Bartels, will be speaking at the Hoboken Mommies – Mommy Lunch. Over the course of the summer, other events will include CPR classes hosted by FDNY paramedics, child outings to Hoboken’s Movies Under the Stars, and parent seminars on Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying (HIB).
While A Brighter Mile is currently focused on serving the Hoboken community, it is expanding its reach throughout the New York Metro Area by allowing educators to indicate their willingness to travel nearby. Prior to joining, families from surrounding areas are encouraged to preview listed educators to determine if there is one who meets their needs.
A Brighter Mile offers monthly ($30), half-year ($120) and yearly ($200) memberships. However, now through April 18th, the site is offering a 25% discount on all initial rates to promote their launch.
Midtown Authentic, Luxury Goods consignment store recently re-located at 700 Garden Street is having their grand opening this Saturday to celebrate the new location. Here is a Facebook post note for owner Rory Chadwick…..

Midtown Authentic formerly at 728 Washington Street has moved to 700 Garden Street in Hoboken. The move puts the 2nd hand luxury consignment store off of Washington Street but in a prime spot in Midtown on the corner of 7th and Garden Street. The website describes the store as follows:

Ralph’s Italian Ices locate at the Northeast corner of 8th Street and Washington Street in Hoboken appears to have left that location. A real estate agency sign (Empire) is shown below indicates that the location is for rent. That is a shame since the owner invested a lot of money putting in refrigerators and equipment but perhaps the foot traffic wasn’t there consistently enough. The product and price were good and the staff and ownership were friendly but operational costs have to be covered by a certain amount of steady business. Perhaps global warming didn’t happen fast enough. It is possible that another mini-chain store like Baby Gap or something else will have the financial wherewithal to give it a shot.
Coming soon to Hoboken is the latest spa offering located at 69 10th Street Hoboken (corner of 10th and Washington Street). The site of the former Rup Day Spa will get another chance to crack the high income demographic of Hoboken with their skin care remedies. Here is wishing them success and the “concierge segment” of Hoboken has yet another business trying to make a go of it.

Joe’s Diner is now open for business in Hoboken. Located at 219 Washington Street at the site of the former Japanese Restaurant Maru, Jo’s Diner is priming to be a bustling breakfast/luncheonette in a prime location. They have been open about a week and are planning on a schedule of 7am-7pm. They are still in the “soft opening” phase but TheBoken.com was able to pop in and try a few of their lunch/dinner items last week….
The first item was the chicken soup which has a unique feature of having a chicken leg in the bowl. The stock was very thick with a lot similarity in flavor to French onion soup without the cheese and a bit more like chicken broth (of course) . This item will likely be a favorite given its unique home-style flavor and perhaps the novelty of getting to eat part of it with your hands.
The next item was the Roast Beef Sandwich. This sandwich comes with delicious dipping gravy and a pasta salad. The Roast Beef and gravy were excellent but perhaps this could be offered with additional options like French fries, mashed potatoes or even coleslaw. The sandwich itself is definitely worth coming back for.
Below are a few more interior shots of the interior of this family run restaurant. Note that this restaurant is adorned with decorative roosters as a tribute to the mother of the owner Joseph who collected them but recently passed away after a long illness. It is a nice touch to a restaurant that is family owned by a third generation Hobokenite.

There appears to be a new fashion related store named Style Square coming to 730 Washington Street in Hoboken, NJ. The LLC that is behind it is Style Khan LLC and they have a permit for new exterior lighting. It is a matter of time until we have another fashion related retail store on Washington Street.

There is a promising new store up that sells cigars and accessories and it is coming to Hoboken soon….
Ash Cigars is coming soon to do business soon at 203 Washington Street in Hoboken. They appear to be going through the final setup stages and sell fine cigars and accessories.
This is the former Prudential Realty office site that has now moved up between 6th and 7th and Washington Street.
