Here is another fundraising event at Hoboken’s Pier 13 bar coming up this weekend….
Pier 13 Boating Club and Liberty Humane Society’s
Dog Adoption Event and Fundraiser
Pier 13 Boating Club (www.pier13hoboken.com) and Liberty Humane Society (www.LibertyHumane.org) are teaming up for a fun-filled adoption event and fundraiser on Saturday, September 7th from 3-8PM.
Liberty Humane will have lots of cute doggies on-hand that afternoon looking for forever homes. All of Liberty Humane’s dogs are up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, and spayed or neutered so they are ready to jump right into your arms. Can’t adopt right now? Guests can still help the animals by making a donation at the bar. Generous donations are put towards preparing the animals for adoption and the housing and care they require until their forever family comes along.
Pier 13, located at 1301 Sinatra Drive in Hoboken, is Hoboken’s destination for the Shipyard Marina, Sailing School, as well as the best craft food and beer purveyors in New Jersey. Besides getting the chance to meet Liberty’s amazing pups, guests can also spend the day enjoying local food trucks, craft beers, and cocktails all while sitting right underneath the beautiful New York City skyline.

Maxwell’s, the recently closed music night spot that had served Hoboken for a 35 year stretch seems to have come back from the grave at least potentially. There were signs put up at MAxwell’s over the Labor Day Weekend that have state the bar/restaurant/music venue is looking for experienced servers and bartenders. People interested can apply in person or email resumes to MaxwellsHoboken@gmail.com.
For those at a loss since the institution located at the corner of 11th and Washington Streets closed, there is indeed hope it will re-open. Perhaps they just needed to get rid of one of their partners Todd Abramson who was quoted on NJ.com stating:
“The culture in Hoboken is driven by TV now. A lot of the bars downtown are fighting with each other for who has the most giant TVs. That’s what Hoboken nightlife has become.”
Well that is the opinion of one of the former partners but it looks look whoever is remaining is looking at another go. For those music fans who loved Maxwell’s I offer these parting words…. in the immortal expressions of Jessie Jackson: “Keep Hope Alive!”
“There’s no crying in baseball” – At least according to the character Jimmy Dugan in the movie “A League of their Own” or your typical NY Mets fan. To understand the culture shock to some of woman playing professional baseball during World War II when MLB suspended their league for several years while young men went off to war here is a quote that pretty much sums up the cultural attitudes of many during that time…..
“Careers and higher education are leading to the masculinization of women, with enormously dangerous consequences to the home, the children, and our country. When our boys come home from war, what kind of girls will they be coming home to? And now the most disgusting example of this sexual confusion: Mr. Walter Harvey of Harvey bars is presenting us with women’s baseball. Right here in Chicago, young girls plucked from their families are gathered at Harvey Field, to see which one of them can be the most masculine. Mr. Harvey, like your candy bars, you’re completely… nuts.”
Well, if you and your friends have seen this movie about women’s baseball and think you know your stuff Trivia AD is hosting another one of their trivia night’s tomorrow night at The Shannon Wednesday August 28th at 8pm. The Shannon is located at 106 1st Street in Hoboken. Reservations can be made by emailing email@example.com.

Trivia AD was busy in Hoboken in the month of August and here is one more event at the Village Pourhouse for musical movie trivia buffs. On August 26 at 8pm Trivia AD will be hosting the Pitch Perfect Trivia contest based on the popular movie at the Village Pourhouse in Hoboken. The address is 205 1st Street Hoboken, NJ. This is your chance to get “pitch slapped” and you most certainly don’t want to be out of the action and later regret being absent and saying “son of a pitch” or something like that. But I digress like a never ending circle of fifths.
Reservations can be made by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org and more information about Trivia AD events by going to www.TriviaAD.com.
On Wednesday August 28th from 4-11pm, Pier 13 in Hoboken will be hosting a fundraising event for Hudson County CASA. For those who might not know CASA’s mission is to train volunteers to advocate on behalf of these displaced children, who have been abused and neglected, with the goal of finding each child a safe and permanent home.
Since 2003, Hudson County CASA has trained 149 volunteer advocates who have helped to place more than 150 children into permanent homes. CASA volunteers complete a comprehensive training program before being assigned to a case. Along the way, they work closely with a full-time CASA staff member whose job is to ensure our volunteers are successful in their advocacy.
So there you have it; great views with Pier 13 for a great cause Hudson County CASA. A percentage of sales from Pier 13 and the food trucks will go towards this organization. Should there be rain the rain date is Thursday August 29th.
For more information on Hudson County CASA go to their website at http://www.hudsoncountycasa.org/.
The former site of the Whiskey Bar is now Mills Tavern in Hoboken and will try to capitalize on the more upscale sports bar trend that has hit Hoboken by storm in the last few years. Joining Black Bear, Texas Arizona, 4 Ls, Wicked Wolf Tavern, McSwiggans, Village Pourhouse, and 1 Republik just to name a few recently added or renovated sports bars, Mills Tavern is in what should be an ideal location to capitalize on the foot traffic from weekend visitors and weekday commuters off the PATH alike.
Some residents may lament the absence of the live music that the Whiskey Bar brought to the stage Thursdays through Saturdays but the owners obviously thought it was time to renovate and keep up with the current up-scaling of Hoboken establishments. I spoke with owner David Jaycee and this is one of four establishments he is now at least part owner of. They include Black Bear Bar, Bahama Mama’s Arthur’s and now Mills Tavern. David graciously gave TheBoken.com a tour of the place. As part of the full building renovation the 2nd floor apartment that was there was eliminated and is now a 2nd floor bar area that even has some lounge space. The space is very large with ample TVs and selection of about 20 tap beers. There are three separate bars altogether and the theme is Americana throughout with salvaged signs and tables made from re-purposed wood.
Here are more photos below:
They even have a limited bar menu that includes fried pickles shown above. The pickles were tasty and I also liked the angry burger which was well prepared but a bit on the smallish side. Overall, the price points for the bar menu are very reasonable as well as the drinks . Here is wishing this new Hoboken establishment the best of luck.
Update 8/27/2013: On a subsequent visit I tried their double burger and thought that was a good value. The freshly cut french fries are also flavorful and fresh.

The Cadillac Cantina is set to open its doors to the Public officially on Sunday August 18,2013. Located at 80 River Street In Hoboken, NJ this is the location of the former Oddfellows Restaurant and Bar. The theme now is a more upscale Mexican with a smartly renovated decor. The ownership is the same as Texas Arizona and they have POS system, Intellitap system, an automated beer tap system that keeps the beer very cold and a nicely designed bar and restaurant area. Its almost as if John Taffer of Bar Rescue had influence on the design himself.
For some humor and a bit of kitsch there is a rendition of the Lucha Libre Last supper in the main bar area as well as more traditional religious crosses in other areas. Walking around and examining the place I saw a lot of attention to detail and thought went behind the design and functionality as well.
With the amount of effort that went into this renovation the bar is being raised a bit in terms of going more upscale in downtown Hoboken. This makes sense given the demographic trends. I feel based on the margaritas and the food I ate that this new place is worth checking out on your way home from work or at night for a nice dinner and drinks with with friends.
